CURRICULUM DAY: 6TH JUNE:
Principal’s Report:
ATHLETICS DAY: POSTPONED TO FRIDAY
AUGUST:
1ST
Tomorrow was to be our College’s Annual Athletics
Carnival at the Victoria University Athletics track in
Hoppers Lane Werribee. Due to the forecast rain
throughout the day, it has been decided to postpone
the day . Our new date is now Friday 1st August. If the
weather is not suitable on that day, our back up day
will be Monday 4th August. We apologise for any
inconvenience, however, as we are required to book
and pay for bus transport and changing arrangements
at the last minute is very difficult on the bus company.
In addition, we cannot conduct most of athletic events
in poor weather conditions. As such we felt that the
interests of the students and staff are best served by
postponing to a later date. Unfortunately, the earliest
suitable date was 1st August. We appreciate your
understanding in relation to this change.
ANNUAL COMMUNITY MEETING:
At the commencement of tomorrow’s May School
Council meeting our College Annual Community
Meeting will be held for the purpose of discussing the
2013 Annual Report. The Report was tabled at the last
School Council meeting. This is an opportunity for
Laverton College community members to hear about
the progress and development of the College. Parents
and community members are able to access the 2013
Annual Report on the College website under the
‘About Us’ tab, in the ‘Policies and Info’ section.
As previously mentioned in the newsletter, we have a
Curriculum Day Friday, next week, 6th June. No
children are to attend school on this day. No staff
will be present at school on 6th June as the school will
be having an electrical shutdown so that the power
supply to the new gymnasium can be installed. Staff
will be working at The Sady McCarthy Professional
Learning Centre at Altona College on this day. There is
no school the following Monday ( 9th June ) as well,
due to the Queen’s Birthday public holiday.
Have a great week.
Neil Sproal
College Principal

Year 7 Placement 2015
Could parents’, who have not yet returned the
Application for Year 7, 2015 Placement Form please
do so by Wednesday, 28th May, 2014.
On Wednesday 21st May, the Year 11 Psychology class
conducted an experiment with some Grade Prep and
Four students about cognitive development. The
experiment ran really well, with the Grade Prep and
four students giving the Year 11’s some interesting
experiences. A big thank you to all students who
participated.

SENIOR INTERSCHOOL SPORT:
On Tuesday 13th May, 2014, four Senior interschool
sport teams represented Laverton P – 12 College in
three sports against other schools. It was our biggest
turn out yet. Thank you to Mr Michael Daborn and Mr
Barrera for helping take out the teams.
Congratulations to all who participated. The last
interschool sport day for the year will be Monday 23rd
June.
On Friday 9th May, 5/6C ran a stall at the School Fete,
which they called the ‘Hole in One Extravaganza’. In
this photo, Connor (5/6C) is supervising Hallie (5/6A)
attempting to bounce the ping-pong ball into one of
the six plastic cups to win a prize. This game proved
very enjoyable for a lot of the students and 5/6C were
so pleased to have raised so much money for Laverton
P – 12 College.
A huge thanks must go to all students who were
involved in the organisation and execution of this
magnificent day on the school calendar. Well done to
all students, especially 5/6C for raising over $160!!!
Miss. Mickayla Ward (and 5/6C)
INTERSCHOOL SPORTS YEARS 5 AND 6:
Finally, a big congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 girls
who represented Laverton P – 12 College with great
enthusiasm and fantastic teamwork throughout the
tournament. Thank you also to Carol for her support
on the day.
Miss Mickayla Ward
YEAR 7 FOOD TECHNOLOGY:
On Wednesday, 30th April, the Grade 5/6s represented
Laverton College for Interschool Sports. Our Rounders
team – Oh Min Su, Sher, Paw P’Lea Moo, Connor, Law
Eh, Noor and Eh K’Paw did a fantastic job and played
very well. We came fourth on the day. Considering
that some of our members had not played Rounders
before, it was a tremendous effort! The students used
their strengths of persistence, teamwork, hope and
humour to do their very best. Although we didn’t win
the competition, we were all winners because we got
to spend the day playing sport and having fun! Well
done all.
SPORT YEARS 7 & 8 NETBALL:
On Friday 16th May, a Year 7 and 8 girls team
participated in the 2014 School Sport Victoria Netball
Competition. The netball tournament consisted of six
teams from the Hobsons Bay Division who played at
Altona Netball Stadium in Altona Meadows.
The captain, Hayley Fullerton, was excellent at making
sure the girls worked together as a team and were
always encouraging each other. It was a tough
competition and unfortunately, we were unable to get
a win, but that didn't stop Laverton's fighting spirit
and drive to improve each game they played.
Olivia Kovas, Hayley Fullerton and Diana Mangar
showed great skill to score Laverton's goals on the
day. Rahel Bayew and Anna Laaina worked well
together down court, each deserving Best On Ground
for the tournament. Well done Anna and Rahel!
Cooking healthy, yet delicious food these last few
weeks has been a blast. With plenty more recipes to
come and skills to learn, it's easy to say that food
technology is my favourite subject.
Edi Bahtiri 7A
Cooking is very enjoyable especially when everyone
works as a team and follows the instructions for a
delicious and successful meal. The cooking equipment
is conveniently located and easy to handle. We have
learnt many skills while cooking. I look forward to
food technology every week.
Marie Kassim 7A
Cooking never really excited me until I discovered
food technology at Laverton P – 12 College. The
brand new technology, including a camera and TV
monitors allowing us to see the teacher's cooking
demonstration, help us to view cooking in a
completely different way. The large commercial
kitchen with modern equipment enhances our
cooking journey.
Inspired by this incredible
experience, cooking has become my new future
ambition.

Prep – 4 News:
BREAKFAST CLUB:
Breakfast club is held between 8.15 8.45 am. Children will be able to get
extra toast or raisin bread before
school each morning.
SPORT:
CHANGES IN THE PLAYGROUND:
It is important that students wear the correct shoes
for participating in sport (i.e. runners) so that they do
not injure themselves. Runners can be brought along
in their bag and changed into before the sport class.
At the end of sport the students can put their school
shoes back on.
A long jump pit has been placed in our playground.
The oval will be resurfaced once the buildings are
completed.
WINTER UNIFORM:
A plain navy blue beanie may be worn this term.
Windcheaters must not have a hood on them. Plain
black runners are recommended for everyday wear
but if wearing black leather school shoes please bring
a pair of runners to change into for sport.
PSYCHOLOGY EXPERIMENT:
Seven small gardens will be put in the playground to
integrate with the class programs. The focus of
change and healthy foods will be promoted in this
time. Some gardens may be sensory to stimulate the
senses and descriptions of the attributes of plants. If
your children have allergies to plants please let us
know.
SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALE:
On Tuesday 3rd June we will be having a sale of second
hand items of school uniform for students in the Prep4 area at 3.15 pm.




Windcheaters – plain will be on sale for $2,
Logo windcheaters $4.
School dresses will be $5.
All items will be washed.
MEDICAL ALERT AND SPORT ALERTS:
On Wednesday many of our Foundation and Grade 4
students worked with the Year 11 Psychology
students. It was an amazing lesson organised by Ms
Whitefield that engaged and delighted the students.
The aim of the lesson was to allow the Year 11
students to discover the learning and assumptions
that are made at different ages. Piaget’s Theory of
Cognitive Development was actively determined by
the students playing games with the Year 11 students.
It was wonderful to see the delight on the faces of all
involved.
HOBSONS BAY COUNCIL AWARD:
Last Wednesday evening one of our
MEA staff, Htoo Htoo Moero, was
presented with an award for
Volunteering in the Hobsons Bay
Community.
There were twenty three recipients
of the award this year and their
photos are displayed in the Library
at Central Square and will also be displayed at the
Laverton Hub.
Htoo Htoo spends many hours helping the Karen
families in our community and it is a great honour to
be recognised for her tireless work.
Congratulations Htoo Htoo from everybody at
Laverton P-12 College on receiving this award.
If your child cannot participate in sport or has a
medical reason (i.e broken arm etc.) we need a note
advising the reason and the length of time the student
will not be able to participate (sport/running around
etc.).
The student will then be issued with a “Sport Alert” or
“Medical Alert” badge which they will wear while at
school. They must collect it before school and at the
end of the day return it to the Prep-4 office.
If your child suffers from asthma they must have an
