charged with assault until two
white women dressed as
males were discovered.
 The women who had
“relations” with the white
males were afraid that the
police would discover the
truth, so, they claimed rape
against the nine black men.
 The nine young men were
being tried for rape and
eventually charged with rape.

ruled the conviction due to false
evidence on the defendant.
 The state later tried one of the
boys, Haywood Patterson, and he
was convicted a second time.
Though, the judge believed the
fact that he did not commit the
crime accused.
 The state again tried another of
the boys, and, he was sentenced
to death. Then the court overruled
the sentence, stating that they
excluded blacks from jurries.
*Continued
 They again tried the first boy, Haywood
Patterson, and sentenced him to 75 years in
prison.
 Alabama released the four youngest of the boys,
who served six years of prison, and later paroled
all but Patterson.
 Patterson escaped from prison and found his
way up to Michigan, where in three years he was
convicted for manslaughter and died in prison.
 The last known survivor later went to the north
in 1946 after his parole , and was granted a full
pardon by the Albanian governor in ‘76.
