

Main idea: Human activity can have a
negative impact on the air.
Examples?? Types of activities or their
impact?

Air Pollution Smog=chemicals that combine w/
oxygen in the ozone. Found in cities.
Cause breathing problems.
 Smog City 2
 Smog pictures
 Thoughts on smog in Korea or where
you have lived?

Air Pollution continued Acid rain=chemicals in pollution
combine w/rain.
 Kill fish, eat away at surfaces and kill
plant life. Acid rain pics
 Destroying the ozone damages Earth’s
ability to block damaging rays from the
sun that cause skin cancer.

Greenhouse affect
 Gases in the atmosphere trap the sun’s
warmth.
 Pollution may be strengthening the
effect…..
 Global warming
 May be caused by burning?
 Coal, oil and natural gas. Video clip

Main idea: Some human activity
damages our environment.
 Lithosphere=earth’s crust
 Topsoil important part of lithosphere
 Crop rotation-changing what is
grown year to year helps to protect
topsoil.

Deforestation-cutting down forests w/o
replanting.
 Causes loss of topsoil, extinction of
plants and animals, less oxygen and
more carbon dioxide
 Video clip

Main Idea: Water pollution poses a threat
to a vital and limited resource.
 Hydrosphere=Earth’s surface water
and ground water.
 Conservation= careful use of a
resource, to avoid waste.

Irrigation=how H2O is distributed to
crops.


Often wasteful bc much evaporates or soaks into the
ground before getting to the crops.
Pesticides used to kill insects often
poison the water and soil.

Biosphere=collection of plants and
animals that live on Earth.
 Made up of many ecosystems=a place
shared plants and animals that
depend on one another for survival.
 Biodiversity=the variety of plants and
animals living on the planet.
 Is shrinking due to pollution and
deforestation
