Other OS32C Enhancements
• Configuration Tool version changes from 1.5.0 to
1.6.0 (Download from www.sti.com)
◦ Non-Safety Checksum
 Checksum value is updated when changes are made to the
warning zones or the non-safety-critical parameters
◦ Import/Export Zone Coordinates
 Allows for CAD drawing coordinates to be imported in the
zone configuration
◦ Maintenance Access Level (all scanners)
 Allows a user to modify non-safety parameters only

OS32C-DM Data
• Detection Zone State
◦ Can provide information about Warning 1, Warning 2, and
Safety zone status per beam
• Input & Output status
◦ Zone selection inputs (verification that inputs have
changed)
◦ Auxiliary and safety outputs
• Configuration checksum values
◦ Verification of settings from commissioned values
• Measurement data
◦ Provides distance in mm or time of flight in picoseconds or
reflectively (signal strength) information per beam
◦ Longer range than safety, up to 50m

EDS File and Assemblies
• EDS File (Electronic Data Sheet)
◦ Tells the configuration software:
 How to find device info, ie version
 How to find and setup / configure the device
 Contains a list of assemblies and the data size
• Input Assembly Object examples
◦ Define what data is being communicated from the sensor to the PLC
 System status
 Zone Status
 Measurement data
 Range data
 Reflectivity data
• Output Assembly Object examples
◦ Beam report selection mask register
 Allows reporting on a subsection of beams
– Angle
– Individual Beam selection

Understanding Measurement
• Safety - multiple scans = longer response time
• Measurement – single scan = 40ms response time fixed
• Reflectivity of object affects accuracy
D = (c x T)/2
c = 299,792,458,000 mm/sec
Distance to object determined by the “time of flight” of the light pulse.

Application: Range Finding
• Intelligent Navigation
• Customer needed intelligent automated fork lifts to load pallets
onto trailer trucks
• The fork lifts need to track the sides and determine where the
next pallet will be placed.
• Multiple zone sets, up to 70
• Measurement Distance data
• Signal strength Data (positioning via reflector reference)

Application: Reporting
• Large scale process line
• 30 plus scanners per assembly line.
• Customer needed a complete machine status update with a
simple request
• Customer needs to maximize machines efficiency and minimize
maintenance and down time.
• Ethernet I/P was the customers protocol of choice.
• Immediate machine status reports
• Configuration check sum to assure there was no tampering with
any scanner settings.
• Confirmation that the appropriate zone was active when the
machine controls requested it.

User Integration tools
• Easy to use function blocks
◦ Perfect for simple PLC controlled status and data
updates.
◦ A simple effective method to integrate the status and
measurement data to a PLC.
◦ These function blocks can be used in the PLC code to
automatically configure the PLC to process and
display the information

Omron PLC Function Block: Measurement Configuration
Input Assembly: This is the start PLC
memory location of the input assembly,
this is entered as an DINT second word
should be 0
Output Assembly: This is the start
PLC memory location of the output
assembly, this is entered as an DINT
second word should be 0
Out Beam Data: This is the start PLC
memory location where the calculated
range data will be written too. The DM
location size will change with beam
angle & bean spread are changed.
Beam Angle size: This is the size of
the data that will be ouputted by FB,
this entered as deg from 2 deg to 268
deg.
Beam Start Loaction: Start location of
range data read. 2 to 270 deg
Beam Spread: Number of beams to be
used, 1,2,4,8,or 16
