UM as Pioneer in Engineering

Began in 1956 with the establishment of the Engineering Department
at University of Malaya’s Bukit Timah campus in Singapore.
Offered only degree course in Civil Engineering
Upgrade to a Faculty when University of Malaya relocated to its
campus in Lembah Pantai in 1958 and offered second bachelor
degree in Mechanical Engineering.
A year later, Electrical Engineering was established.
1970, a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering was introduced.
The courses were turned into respective departments in 1974.
1996/97 session, the Faculty introduced six other courses namely in
Telecommunication Engineering, Environmental Engineering,
Materials Engineering, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing
Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.
Recently new courses added is Computer Engineering (2007) and
Biomedical Engineering (Prosthetics and Orthotics) in 2009.

• MERITOCRACY (First degree)
– Define as system of government or other organization
wherein appointments are made and responsibilities
assigned to individuals based upon demonstrated
intelligence and ability (merit).
– Started in 2002
– Online application and also computerized distribution
based on applicant selection.
• Except the APEX University – have the priority to
select student first.
