• A private network that is used to securely share part of a
business’s information or operations
• Information can be shared with suppliers, vendors, partners,
customers, or other businesses
• Requires security and privacy(eg., firewall server management
or the use of digital certificates)
• Can be accessed by anyone with the right clearance

• Can add value to a company by allowing communication and
co-operation with clients, customers, and partners
• Can save money by streamlining traditional functions and cutting
overhead costs
• Provides other advantages to small businesses such as increased
productivity and flexibility

• Sales representatives can deliver interactive presentations
regardless of a customer’s location
• Extranet systems allow contractor businesses to help keep
everyone on track
• Manufacturing industry uses extranets to provide product
specifications with ease
• Allows students to earn credits regardless of where they are or
if they attend class regularly

• Can be expensive to set up(e.g, costs of hardware, software,
manpower and other associated costs)
• Can open systems up to breaches in system security due to
outsiders having access to internal databases
• Threat of packet sniffers
