Birth centres
A birth centre is a special maternity unit, usually staffed by midwives, where you can
give birth in much more home-like surroundings than a hospital room. It is usually
recommended for mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies.
Birth centres are not that common in the Netherlands because many women prefer
to give birth at home, which is encouraged here.
The only birth-centre in Den Haag is in Westeinde Hospital. It has a waterpool. You
can go to the birth centre with the midwife who has carried out your antenatal care.
Westeinde also has an OB/GYN unit onsite should you need to transfer during
labour.

The Birth House - Amsterdam
In Amsterdam, a brand new birth centre has opened, called The Birth House.
An Amsterdam house has been transformed into an oasis of peace, where you can
have your baby safely and in your own way, in a luxury birth suite. They offer a large,
relaxing bath, a king-size double bed, constant attention and care, water births, and
extra facilities for safe pain relief, such as Gas & Air (not currently available in other
Dutch hospitals). Doula care is also available.
The Birth House is part of the renowned Amsterdam Birth Centre.

Kraamzorg – post-natal home care
Kraamzorg (postnatal care) is available to assist the midwife during a home birth and
to help mother and baby at home in the days immediately after the baby is born,
when you return home from hospital.
Generally the kraamzorg, or postnatal care nurse, will visit your home for eight days,
caring for you and your baby and giving advice on health, care, diet and hygiene for
your baby. You can also request help from the kraamzorg with domestic duties
(laundry, light housecleaning, etc.), and you can decide how much help you will
need, varying from a few consecutive hours per day to full days, with or without
domestic help.
Kraamzorg must be requested at the beginning of your pregnancy. In some cases
the insurance, or verzekering, will determine which kraamzorg organisation you can
register with, sometimes you can choose your own. Therefore you must first contact
your insurer to establish which organisation(s) you may contact. They will be able to
provide you with addresses and telephone numbers of kraamzorg organisations in
your area.
