COURSE RATIONALE:
In a world where computer technology is an essential part of school and work life, the Business Computer
Fundamentals course provides students the foundation of knowledge needed to excel in fields that involve
computers and the Internet.
including:
Course reflects the most relevant skills for school and business today,
Computing Fundamentals, Living Online and basic skills on Microsoft Office Suite: Word,
PowerPoint, and Excel. Students will have the focus they need to succeed in both their academic and
career pursuits.
PRE-REQUISITES:
None, but knowledge of MS Word is strongly recommended. Also, the demonstration of a positive attitude
and a professional demeanor is required!
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Internet and Computing Core course consist of three modules:

In the first module, students will explore the various computers available today, their components
and peripherals.

The second module helps students identify network fundamentals and the benefits and risks of
network computing. Students will learn about the Internet, the World Wide Web and websites and
how to use a Web browsing application.

The third module helps students perform functions common to the Microsoft Office applications,
Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Students will practice their typing accuracy on a daily basis and will be eligible to take a typing test to
obtain typing certificate.

Industry recognized certificate: Typing Certificate
In conclusion, Business Computer Fundamentals Course will prepare students for the Business Technology
course.

Business Computer Fundamentals
In keeping with the mission of San Ysidro High School to ensure all students will graduate ready to succeed
in post-secondary education and/or their well-informed career choice. The following college readiness
skills will be incorporated throughout the course:

ASSIGNMENT POLICY:
All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Students who do not turn in their
assignments and/or projects on the due date will be given an opportunity to turn in the assignment and
receive half credit.
Students who are absent the day work is assigned will have one day to complete homework assignments.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor to find out what work the student missed.
FINAL EXAM/PROJECT:
Final project is, but not limited to a “College & Career Ready Portfolio”. Students will develop their portfolio
throughout the semester and will present for Final grade. The final exam will encompass all the areas
covered during the semester. It will be in the form of a project and/or presentation.
GRADING POLICY:
Academic grade will be based on class work, assignments, quizzes, tests, projects and
participation.
Citizenship grade will be based on class participation, conduct, and attendance.
The semester grade will be composed of:

The use of computers is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in the
cancellation of these privileges.
Business Computer Fundamentals – Internet Access Contract
And Computer Lab Policy
All communication on school computers is the property of Sweetwater Union High School District.
Internet access should be utilized for academic purpose only. Use of the Internet provides great
educational benefits to students. Unfortunately, however, some material accessible via the Internet
may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, or potentially offensive to people. Access to the
Internet is given as a privilege to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner.
We require that students and parents or guardians read, accept, and sign the following rules for
acceptable on-line behavior as well as behavior in a computer lab:

Students are responsible for good behavior on the Internet and in the computer lab just as they
are responsible for good behavior in school in general.

Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review
files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the
system responsibly.












The following ARE NOT permitted:
Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
Using obscene language
Harassing, insulting, or attacking others
Damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks
Violating copyright laws
Using someone else’s password
Trespassing in another person’s folders, work or files
E-mail or chatting (only emailing assignments to instructor is permitted)
Playing games on the computers
To access RESTRICTED sites or any sites that contain sexual content, drugs or violence
Intentionally wasting limited resources, including the use of “chain letters” and messages
broadcast to mailing lists or individuals
 Employing the network for gambling purposes
 Employing the network for commercial purposes
 Revealing the personal address or phone number of yourself or any other person without
permission

Business Computer Fundamentals

Students are expected to maintain their assigned equipment and materials properly and to
show good care in operating the computer assigned for their use. Any damage or loss of
materials due to a student’s negligence will be the direct responsibility of the student and
parent(s)/guardian(s). Consequently, if materials or equipment are damaged or lost, the
student and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) are liable for the replacement of them.

Violations may result in a loss of access to the Internet, loss of privileges to the Computer Lab,
and possibly expulsion from the class.
This is to certify that I have read the above rules, and that non-compliance will result in disciplinary
action up to and including dismissal.
