The BackPack Concept - A school nurse asked for help because hungry students were coming to her with stomach aches and
dizziness. The local food bank began to provide the school children with groceries in non-descript backpacks to carry home.
In addition to providing nutritious food to school children in need, some BackPack Programs provide extra food for younger
siblings at home. Others operate during the summer when children are out of school and have limited access to free or
reduced-priced lunches. Food that children take home on weekends. All of the food is child-friendly, nonperishable, easily
consumed and vitamin fortified. Backpacks are discreetly distributed to children on
the last day before the weekend or vacation.

Angel Food’s groceries are sold by the box at $30.00 per unit. Each month’s menu consists of both fresh and frozen items
with an average retail value of approximately $60.00. One box of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week,
or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one would purchase at a grocery store (not
damaged or outdated goods). There are no applications or qualifications. Because Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit
organization, food purchased to donate to someone in need may be fully tax-deductible as a charitable donation. Angel Food
Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Offline Food Stamp Voucher System.

The Emergency Food Box Program provides hungry families and individuals in Fayette County with a 7 day supply of
wholesome food. An individual may receive a food box up to four times within a six-month period. Those in need of
assistance are referred by 220 local churches and social service agencies. Studies have shown that poor children are more likely
to be sick, more likely to miss school and less likely to succeed. The same is true for hungry children. Hunger affects not just
the poor children of Kentucky, but all children, elderly and others who might be in a tight spot and need a helping hand, and it
affects more in Kentucky than in most states across the nation. God’s Pantry works with over 390 partner agency programs to
fight hunger and alleviate the symptoms that accompany it.
