Presidents Report – Zack Dodge
Zack congratulated the SAC for making it this far and he hopes that things are coming along
well.
This past weekend, Zack, Adam and Emma were able to attend the CSA October Conference.
They were brought up to speed on the state of the PSE sector and all of the business that affects
the student body.
CSA is launching a provincial wide campaign on Monday January 21st, 2013 called Blue
Monday. Zack noted that this is an expansion to the mental wellness efforts already put forward
by the Executives and he is happy to see CSA reach out to the Fanshawe campus for awareness.
On Thursday, November 1st at 3:30 p.m. is the United Way Stairclimb at One London Place.
Zack encouraged SAC members to spread the word and encourage others to participate and
donate. Zack will add the link to the SAC Facebook page for further details.
Action Item: Zack to post
more information regarding
the StairClimb on the SAC
Facebook page.
Zack noted that more class reps have begun to sign up and he hopes that the process goes
smoothly for the SAC reps. Zack suggested that if anyone does not have a SAC rep, they should
contact Adam to develop some strategies to get more reps.
Zack is out of office from November 5th to the 9th.
VP External and Academic Affairs – Adam Gourlay
Adam reported that the SAC Retreat went well and he believes the trip allowed the team to move
forward and get ready for a productive year.
Adam presented an award at the Human Services Awards Ceremony and was glad to see the
accomplishments of Fanshawe students.
Adam enjoyed the CSA Conference. He found that the sessions were beneficial, the secretariat
did a great job and SRC was a great host. Glen Murray could not make it to the conference, but
Teresa Piruzza represented Windsor-West and will bring questions to the Minister. He will
respond to all questions as soon as he can via e-mail. Dr. Annette Dufresne conducted a session
about the stigma of mental health. Adam found that it was dry, but there was some valid
information discussed. The Director of Advocacy discussed this year’s advocacy initiatives. The
primary initiatives include: transferability, mental health, and aboriginal and international
students. Dr. Dinardo spoke again and continued her session about the “How?” of peak
performance. Linda Franklin from Colleges Ontario ran a fantastic presentation on how the PSE
can cohesively to be a more productive system. The Mental Health Blue 2013 campaign was
discussed in full. Adam believes that it will go well and that CSA has laid an excellent
groundwork for all the SA’s to move forward. Ken Steele spoke from Academica (good way to
keep in touch, subscribe) and had a lot of great information. He spoke of market intelligence and
his strategic insight into a higher education in particular.
VP Internal – Tory Holmes
Tory noted that Alcohol Awareness week was two weeks ago and it went well. He also reported
that Movember will be starting soon and he encourage SAC reps to participate.
Tory brought several club charters to the table.
2.3
It was:
MOVED By Tory Holmes SECONDED by Adam Gourlay and CARRIED to
approve Fanshawe Financial Society, Free Culture at Fanshawe College, and
Fanshawe Animal Alliance as official FSU Clubs, subject to normal restrictions.
VP Finance – Emma Newman
Emma reported that the CSA Conference went very well. There were a lot of great sessions and
Emma found that it was nice to get together with other student leaders to discuss what is going
on at their campuses. Linda Franklin (President of Colleges Ontario) was Emma’s favorite
speaker of the conference; she was knowledgeable and honest. Emma also enjoyed all of the
Mental Health and Wellness sessions and getting to hear what other schools were doing in that
area. Everyone really seemed impressed with the FSU’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
Emma had her first weekly meeting with the FMT. The FMT didn’t seem to have very much to
say despite the fact they were all interested in using the meetings to discuss what they wanted
their focus to be. Emma thinks that in the future it will start to come together.
The Sex Toy Bingo food collection went really amazing last week. Emma reported that she has
about 70lbs of food collected. This week, Emma and Kendra hope to reach their goal of 500 lbs
of food. Emma is hoping to have a table set up in Forwell Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Emma has emailed Sara about booking a table in Forwell for this and she will email Darby to see
if she can change last week’s posters to read where and when the table will be set up.
Emma brought several SLEF proposals to the table.
2.4
It was:
MOVED By Emma Newman SECONDED by Jessica Brook and CARRIED to
approve the GIS and Urban Planning Level 1 and 3 field trip, subject to normal
restrictions.
VP Entertainment – Kendra Sauder
On Friday, Kendra attended her first London Youth Advisory Council Meeting. Their main
agenda items and goals are: youth engagement in municipal politics and civic activities, green
bin program, recommendations to LTC improvements, youth voice on bylaws and council
proceedings, social media and marketing outreach strategy for the LYAC, arts and entrepreneurship.
Kendra will be on the LTC/Transportation committee and a resource person for the bylaws and
council proceedings. Kendra noted that the FSU may be asked to promote certain initiatives that
need youth feedback. USC had a meeting with the LYAC members. Kendra asked if the Board is
also interested in doing this.
The FU Crew will be busy this Halloween with the various events that will be happening.
Kendra noted that the FU Crew is taking leadership on planning to collect pennies for the penny
drive. They have set a goal and will be coming up with motivations to reach their goal. For
example, Kendra gets pied in the face if they reach a certain number of pennies. The FU Crew is
looking to get people to volunteer to have similar things done to them.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Emma and Kendra will be collecting food around campus
for the We Scare Hunger campaign. Kendra noted that this is largely through word of mouth, so
pass this information on, if possible.
The top ten list of Fanshawe’s Got Talent is in, and Kendra will email this out to everyone who
is interested. Kendra asked the SAC members to please keep November 6th free, as there is a live
show for the top ten finalists in the OBS.
VP Athletics and Residence Life – Matt Stewart
Matt introduced his new program, the Game Awareness Program, to the Board. Matt’s goal is to
promote Varsity and Intramural games to students so that they become more involved with
Athletics.
November 9th, 2012 is the volleyball home opener at Fanshawe in Gyms 1 and 2. Athletics will
be holding a BBQ before the game. Matt asked the SAC to spread the word about the upcoming
games.
Matt noted that Fanshawe’s women’s soccer team won silver at the OCAA’s. Tomorrow starts
off the basketball and volleyball season.
Matt met with Laurie McKnight from the organizing committee for Relay for Life. If anyone is
interested in sitting on the committee, please let Matt know. Matt and Adam will compose an
email with all the necessary information. Kendra noted that Relay for Life is a great way to get
the class reps involved with the FSU.
Action Item: Matt and Adam
to compose an email with all
the necessary Relay for Life
information.
Building Technology and Applied Science and Technology – Rehan Anklesaria
Rehan is currently looking for the students that are already class reps. Rehan will try to recruit
more reps by starting a Facebook group for his division.
Rehan brought some student concerns to the table. Some students have complained that they
have too much homework for their classes. A lot of students have found that several assignments
are assigned at once and are often worth a big percentage of their grade. The professors expect
many criteria and details for certain assignments and some give two assignments due on the
same day. Adam noted that this is normal for programs in Building Technology and it’s what is
expected of the students. Matt said that he can relate to this problem in the Graphic Design
program.
The Home Sweet Home Competition is coming up.
Rehan’s goals as a SAC member are to get more students involved in events around Fanshawe,
to solve the students concerns and to help with fundraising for Habitat for Humanity.
Human Services – Jessica Brook
Jessica currently has several students who are interested in being class reps and are all from
different sections of the programs offered in Human Services. Jessica has received a list of her
class reps and she would like to create a Facebook group for them so that they can stay in
contact. Jessica’s goal for the middle of November is to have at least one class representative for
each program. Jessica is trying to recruit more reps by posting information on Facebook and
Twitter. Jessica has also spoken to the professors and introduced herself to the other classes in
Human Services.
Jessica had a complaint that in one class, their professor does not give back an appropriate
amount of feedback on assignments. Students have complained that she does not make
instructions clear, does not let the students follow along on their laptops and she will be little
students if they ask a question. Jessica instructed the students to ask for more feedback on
assignments and to explain to their professor that in order for them to succeed in her course, that
they need more information on how to better themselves. Adam noted that grading is a problem
in Human Services because it involves a lot of subjective grading. Kendra noted that the VP
External that can help with these types of problems. Adam suggested letting students know about
the Rights and Responsibilities Document.
Another class complained that one of their professors is very monotone when she teaches. They
explained to Jessica that the professor does not inform them on what their tests consist of and
gives no review which leaves the students unprepared for their exams. The biggest problem that
the students brought to Jessica’s attention is that she is all over the place with her thoughts.
Jessica suggested that the students let her know when she gets off topic in order to avoid wasting
time.
Jessica has found that students are not very fond of the Paramed process because they have to
pay to go to their Paramed appointment. Students also dislike the fact that they can’t mail in their
documents. Jessica assured the students that she would do whatever she needs to in order to
voice their concerns.
Language and Liberal Studies – Jake Dodge
Jake is currently still in the process of recruiting reps for his division as he does not have any at
the moment. Jake met with my Student Success Advisor a couple of weeks ago and discussed
how to go about this process. Their plan was that Jake would send the Student Success Advisor
his bio so that she may email it to all of the students in the division.
Unfortunately, Jake’s advisor is now gone from her position until May 2013, so he has had a
hard time getting a hold of the new advisor. Jake has sent the new advisor multiple emails now
and has not heard back from her. Jakes also plans to meet with his program coordinator and
program chair regarding class reps.
Jake has created a few Facebook groups for the classes that he is in so that he can hear about any
problems or concerns within the classes.
So far, Jake has had only one student approach him with a list of problems that is affecting her
class. This student has a problem with her Writ teacher because English is not his first or second
language, he is hard to understand and he repeats himself multiple times about things unrelated
to the course, he seems unsure of what he is teaching and he does not teach, but rambles
throughout the entire class.
Business – Dylan Hammond
Dylan noted several issues that have been brought to his attention.
Students are subject to more bullying during late school hours, especially around Fleming Drive.
Dylan suggested raising awareness about the Safe-Walk Program and encouraging more students
to join the program. Dylan also asked if the boundaries of the program could be extended past
the College grounds. Jenny noticed that it is more rowdy during event nights and has
encountered some issues with this. Kendra suggested the buddy system, but also noted that
Security cannot go off campus due to liability issues. Dylan also suggested asking the police to
send one car around the Fleming Drive area.
Several students have said to Dylan that the Online Ethics, Strategies for Success and Writ
classes are not necessary and should be removed. Students have also come to Dylan saying that
textbooks aren’t as durable as they should be, considering the cost and the Taxation class doesn’t
have a textbook for students. Adam noted that the courses that students believe are unnecessary,
are important parts of the program, so it’s not really an option to remove them. Adam also said
that a these programs are precursors to other courses, so they cannot be removed.
Dylan noted that many students are happy that in their first year they can learn various types of
business concepts, which, in turn, aids them in their decision of what to specialize in. Students
are also very happy with the pace at which they are learning the material as well as the size of
their classes.
Design – Morgan Harris
Morgan has contacted all of her current class reps and has recruited a few others. Morgan will be
setting up a meeting next week. She will also be contacting and setting up meetings with the
program coordinators of the School of Design this week.
Morgan has spoken with the program coordinator for Interior Decorating about SLEF, as the
program is going on a New York City trip at the beginning of November. She said they have
been making good use of it and thanked the FSU.
Tourism and Hospitality – Jenny Rawlins
Jenny is currently working towards securing some class representatives. Come Monday, she will
have spoken with some of the program coordinators and received their suggestions for potential
reps. Jenny has one class rep, but does not have a lot of information from her.
Jenny reported that Saffron’s has a Fanshawelicious deal until November 29th, which is a 3
vourse meal for $20.00 a person. Reservations must be made. The Fairmont will be coming to
Fanshawe on November 6th to recruit Hospitality students. They will have a presentation at 11:00
a.m. in room T1003. On October 23rd, some students were sent to a cocktail reception as part of
the Tourism Summit 2012 at the Budweiser Gardens. They represented Fanshawe well. On
October 20th, students attended the Canadian Hospitality Foundation Awards and Jennifer Buck
of the Culinary Management – Apprentice course and Michael Crich of the Culinary Skills –
Chef Training course were both awarded with scholarships. Also at this event, Fanshawe donated
a white glove dinner for 10 in Saffron’s dining room and it was auctioned off for $4200.00.
Jenny has a few complaints from students about various professors. One professor doesn’t finish
his power points and never follows through with posting marks in a timely fashion. Another
professor does not have an open mind when it comes to answers for questions. Collin suggested
taking up the test as a class so that students can bring up why they answer the question the way
they did. His class does this and they find it very affective.
Health Sciences and Nursing – Laura Robson
Laura received a list of class reps from Adam and promptly sent an e-mail to those individuals
asking for their schedules so that she can set up an introductory meeting. She has spoken to the
Respiratory Therapy class rep, Emily Pelton, as well as some MRT students who indicated they
had been elected as class rep and encouraged them to get them and their program’s reps signed
up with the FSU.
Laura reviewed some upcoming events for her division. MRT Week is November 4th-10th.
Second year students will be selling tickets their class for a London Knights game on November
9th. They will also be having a bake sale as part of a fundraising effort.
Laura has had a few problems come up but she suggested to the students to ask the teacher about
it first. Kendra noted that if students are having problem with bringing up issues to their
professors, Adam and Greg can help with this.
Information Technology – Kyle Savage
Kyle has not had a meeting with his class reps yet. He has sent an email to introduce himself and
he is working on scheduling a meeting.
A few students have voiced their concerns about LAN Ports that are not working in class rooms.
Kyle plans to bring up these concerns with his class reps and see what they think about the
subject. Some of the sound systems in the classrooms need a tune-up and Kyle will address these
concerns with the teachers.
Kyle has been going to class introducing himself to his classmates so as to get to know the
people in his program better.
Transportation and Motive Power – Colin Syvret
Collin and his program coordinator were wondering if the FSU would be present at Z Building
during Open House. Zack said that this can be arranged.
Collin noted that there haven’t been any posters at Z Building so far. Carol said that someone is
supposed to be bringing posters there each week.
Action Item: Carol to look
into whether or not posters
are going to Z Building.
The smoking area in Z Building is still a problem. Collin noted that the smoking area is visible
from the road, which is not the best image for Fanshawe and now that Pre-Health students are at
Z Building, it is more of an issue. Collin suggested moving the area to conceal it from onlookers.
The lab coats that Motive Power students are required to wear are not practical and no one zips
them up. Collin proposed a new type of uniform for his program, which are a Dickies style long
sleeved shirt. Kendra suggested contacting the Clothing Store about this.
Collin reported that one of the teacher’s friends is bringing a 77 Malibu and students get to work
on it.
New Business
SAC Mentorship Program – Zack introduced the SAC Mentorship program to the Board. Zack
will arrange this and partner up the Executives and SAC members.
Action Item: Zack to set up
the SAC Mentorship
Program.
SFS Recommendation – Zack asked the Board what they thought about SFS material being given
to the supervisors of professors, not just the professors themselves. FSU.ca or FOL will
potentially be holding a survey for students regarding this subject. Jake thinks that the
information should be passed on to superiors. Kendra thinks this is a good idea and it could be
marketed through the iPad. The Research Department is willing to partner with the FSU on this
subject.
Contemporary Media Representative – Natalie McAnsh has not responded to any emails or
phone calls from Zack and therefore should be removed from the Board.
