Goal
My personal project is to make Dhrieama Orphanage one of the community and service
choices in Qatar Academy so that we can offer support to help the orphans to develop
and be empowered to face challenges and obstacles that they will meet in the future
also If the Orphanage allow us to take care of the babies we will.
Another idea is raising money for several poor countries and the money that is raised
will be divided equally amongst the top poorest countries. The list for the top poorest
countries is going to be taken from the Qatar Charity.
Historically Dhrieama Orphanage was created by the State of Qatar by her highness
Sheikha Moza Al Misnad in order to have the concept was that every child would have a
sense of family, and to support the communities into developing a sense of community
sprit and leadership.
The project is going to last for a period of two to three weeks depending upon the
success of the first team building exercises with the volunteer students and the
Orphans.
In order for the goals of the project to be met there has to be a period of training so that
only the suitable volunteer students will be used for the project. For the aims of the
project to succeed. The volunteer students have to have certain characteristics. These
include commitment to a project, empathy and kindness and are able to have enough
free time in order to support the vision and aims of the project.
-3-
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
The vision of the project is to bring community and out reach work together by involving
and developing a group of committed volunteer students at Qatar Academy to develop
into community leaders through charitable actions and for the Orphans to feel included
into the community and empowered to escape the circumstances of their life.
The goal of the project is to create a sustainable community based program that will support the
orphans in their social, educational and interpersonal skills. The aim is to empower the orphans
at the Dreama Orphanage to support them in tutoring the younger children and help with the care
plans for the babies.
The aim of the project is to raise awareness within the children that they have the ability to be
able to transcend their own circumstances and to be motivated through the spirit of mentorship,
and positive role modals. The purpose is for the child to develop into a person who will be able
to feed themselves for the rest of their lives.
Spending time over a two to three day period per a week and working in a supportive role will
achieve this with the children on a one on one basis.
This particular client group will require additional funding to support their lives. This will also
be supported by this project. This additional funding will be provided by the project through a
system of charitable donations.

Selection of Sources
The original goal of my personal project was to make Dhriema’s orphanage one of the
community and service choices in Qatar Academy. Dhriema is an organization that supports
orphans; with Dhriema’s orphanage I had faced many obstacles to overcome with the
administration. The problems that I occurred were as follows, the supervisor of my project Ms.
Maha Al Rumaihi had called and e-mailed the orphanage and they accepted. After that I called
them and I spoke with Ms. Muneera Al Bloushi in the administration office of the orphanage she
asked me to come to the orphanage so we can organize everything together and when I went to
the orphanage this is what she told me “ I’m sorry but we cannot offer volunteer work at this
time you can come after the spring break” (which is a holiday in the Arabic schools). I was
surprised with what she said and tried to work it out with her and organize everything to make
this work but she said, “sorry we can’t at this time”. She gave me other places names that can
help me, and I can work there. I called but no one answered a part from one which was the
Elderly House. When I went to school and I talked to Ms. Maha and Mr. Holsten the community
and service coordinator they weren’t happy with what I told them. Mr. Holsten told me to go
back to them and ask them for a letter from them as an evidence to prove that I did everything
but the problem was from them. After that, I tried calling the orphanage but they didn’t reply so I
had to go to them and when I went there . I asked fort Ms. Muneera Al Bloushi and I was
surprised that they told me she was travelling and I can come back when she arrives, I asked
them to write me a note to explain that Ms. Muneera told me to come after the spring break for
the volunteer work, because I don’t have a product to present on Wednesday, because of them
and I was going to make a poster that has Mr.Holsten’s letter that he sent to Dhriema and
-5-
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
Dhriema’s reply that I can come after the spring break for the volunteer work which was
supposed to be the evidence that the product will be working after spring, but now I don’t have
anything to present on Wednesday apart from Mr. Holsten’s letter. After that I decided to create
a storybook for the Pre-school students to present something on Wednesday I created flash cards
Teaching children about being safe in their everyday lives, and I did this on the same day that we
had to present it and everything went alright teachers and parents liked it and thought it was a
good idea. One of the parents asked me to make more copies of it and distribute it in the preschool area and give copies of it to pre-school teachers. One of the teachers I visited from the
pre-school teachers was Mrs. Stafford’s and she told me to come back after I present it and give
her the flashcards to upload it on the wiki.
Consequently I had to change direction with my personal project and choose another product to
present. Due to circumstances beyond my control I do not have the sources required for this
report as evidence for my product, as I am still waiting for the letter form the orphanage to prove
that it was not possible to continue with my first product.
The source for my second product to replace the original concept was from Mrs Stafford Preschool teacher.

Application of information
The connections between the information I knew and the original goal are strong due to the fact
that I helped to teach my cousin’s son the dangers that are within the home when he was a
toddler. I realized when this event happened that there could be many fun ways that could
educate a child; as I taught him about the dangers of electricity and water in a disorganized way.
I felt at the time that it could be taught in a better way to a child than I had done with my
cousin’s son.
When I came to do my personal project I felt that there was a gap in the market that could help
parents discuss the dangers in the house with their child in a more organized methodical way.
This was achieved in the product through the design and the images.
In order to achieve my goal I had to reconnect my personal experience with finding a solution
that would meet the criteria of my personal goal. I had to research many disciplines such as child
physiology and how children learn in order to have a successful product that could be easily
understood by children and be easily adult friendly. Not only did I have to research these
disciplines which were alien to me I had to learn difficult concepts that I did not really
understand yet. By the time I finished reading on the issues that children face when learning in a
second language I felt that I could clearly design the product that would overcome all the issues
that a child would face.
This is reflected in the design and the layout, which translates all the research I did on how
children learn and process information. I am especially happy with the connection that the
-7-
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
information contained in the product that reinforces parents as a teaching aid supporting them in
teaching their children about the safety in the home.
Well-designed font in dual languages, images that demonstrate the before and after dangers of
the issues raised and the real life situations that show the child where the danger lies. The images
are colorful that will keep the child’s attention. The research showed that children fewer than
three had an attention span of two seconds so the product I made as interactive as possible so that
at all times the child is kept entertained. As well as learning linguistic words that are contained in
the product.
There is a connection between the final product that applies the research that I did on how
children learn in a second language. Visual aids coupled with words in dual language enables the
parents to be proactive in engaging the child’s attention.

Achieving the goal
How well have I achieved the goal?
My personal project is to make Dhriema Orphanage one of the community and service choices in
Qatar Academy so that we can offer support to help the orphans to develop and be empowered to
face challenges and obstacles that they will meet in the future also If the Orphanage allow us to
take care of the babies we will.
This goal could not be achieved effectively because of the various issues that I encountered at the
orphanage and I had to essentially create a new product at the various last stages of the personal
project. I am not satisfied that I did not achieve my goal but I do like the replacement product
(flash cards) and think that it is important to have a safety campaign for pre school children.
Has my project met the specification I set out at the start?
As I mentioned before that I haven’t met the specifications The flash cards are not the original
specification and I really am not happy that due to circumstances beyond my control I was
unable to do the project that was originally specified at the orphanage. I feel let down. I found
this very disturbing.
-9-
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
Therefore, I have met all the specifications for the flashcards I have done Flash cards
presentation teaching children about being safe in their everyday life.
The only thing left right now is to go and give Mrs. Stafford the flashcards to upload them onto
the school wiki and make copies to give them to the pre-school teachers and distribute them in
pre-school area so parents can look at them and they can have their own copy. However the
alternative to the original product the flash cards has successfully met the criteria for the
specification for the product. The flash cards clearly show through visual images and verbal
words in English and in Arabic the safety issues that a pre school child has to learn in order to be
safe. I am satisfied that I have met the product specification.
Is my outcome or product of a high quality?
In my point of view my product didn’t end with the high quality but as it demonstrates clearly
images and verbal clues that any adult from a mother to a pre school teacher could use as a
teaching aid the importance of safety first I think it’s a high quality. Each flash card reinforces
the previous flash card with the same image that the child will be able on his own or in a group
activity understand message. It also can be used in a multi cultural society. I think that I don’t see
it as that high quality work that’s because I know that I aimed for something else and I ended up
with this.
- 10 -
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
This was an important aim of the second product and this was achieved, verbal and imagery
based teaching aid that would reinforce the importance of safety for pre school children has been
successfully achieved in meeting the criteria and objectives of the second product.
Grade:
I’m not really sure what grade I deserve, because I don’t know how to grade myself but I have to
do this, So, I think the grade I deserve for criterion E is (between 3 and 4) I’m not saying this to
just give myself a good grade because at the end I’ll get the grade that the teacher will give me.
I think that it’s between 3 and 4 because “the quality of the outcome is satisfactory” (3)& it
“meets most or all of the specifications”(4)
This was an important aim of the second product and this was achieved, verbal and imagery
based teaching aid that would reinforce the importance of safety for pre school children has been
successfully achieved in meeting the criteria and objectives of the second product.

Reflection on Learning
By completing the project I learnt a variety of life skills and lessons which I should be aware of
in the future. The life skills that I learnt came in the form of people skills and how unprofessional
certain areas are in Qatar.
Before the project I had never given any consideration regarding the importance of professional
conduct and the need for active communication skills. The staff at DAEEMA were completely
unprofessional and showed me by actual proof the causal issues that would arise from their
inability to be truthful and keep their promises regarding correspondence in the form of letters. I
saw that when we do not do our job correctly then other people will suffer.
I also learnt about the importance of planning and factoring in SWAT analysis by creating a
second product just in case the specifications of the first product failed at any stage.
Preparation and finding solutions to the issues that arose during the product research meant that
human ingenuity criteria and social and health criteria were met. The flash cards were a second
choice and was a solution to the problems at Deema that I had no control over. It was innovation
arising from human ingenuity that meant I could successfully meet the specifications for the
second goal.
The concept for the flash cards taught me how we learn and the physiology of learning. I realized
that people do not learn in a straight linear fashion but rather than learn in a 3d perspective
- 12 -
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
through visual and oral stimulation. Learning about the physiology of how we absorb
information and utilize it in our communities resulted in improving my ability to learn. I realized
that I need to learn with a variety of strategies as I am learning not in my mother tongue. It was
interesting to learn that children who learn in a second language do have cultural identity and
confidence issues, which can prevent them from successfully meet their educational targets. It
was from this perspective that I learnt more about how I collect and recall knowledge that I learn
at school. I discovered during the research stage of the flash cards that I should combine visual
stimulation with oral learning strategies to be able to learn more effectively.
By the time I had completed the flash cards I had come to a realization that there was nothing
wrong with me in how I approach my study. Previously I felt that I was not as good as the other
western students as I took longer to grasp the meaning of the English words throughout my
academic life and this made me feel stupid and insecure. This personal project taught me that this
was perfectly normal for children learning in a second language.
I am glad that I did this product as I know it has helped me improve the quality of how I present
work and taught me the importance of professionals conduct in the work place as other people
will be affected by people not doing their job properly and meeting their deadlines.

Report on the Project
The project does meet the criteria that were established in the rubric. The goal had to be edited as
the first goal was unachievable and I was forced to redesign another product in order to meet the
necessary requirements of the personal project.
Writing the report within the word limit was difficult at first and also keeping regular journal
commentaries on various stages of the personal project were irritating as I felt restricted.
However over time these issues were overcome as I learnt better time management and
developed as I progressed on this project.
The journal at first annoyed me by the fact that we had to follow procedures throughout the
writing of the product. I felt at first it was unnecessary to have this much organizational structure
as I felt that it prevented and slowed down my thought process.
But as the project progressed I realized the importance of writing everything down from
telephone numbers to appointments and to the failures of other organizations that prevented the
first goal to be successful in its application. The diary became an important tool in order to keep
me organized and to establish structure and miles stones that I had to reach throughout the
project that would keep me on track and meet the deadline for the final product.
The diary became also the action plan for the product and the dynamics that kept the project
moving towards its completion. Without the organizational structure I would not have been able
to develop a risk management style of action when it became obvious when writing in the journal
that the first goal would be unworkable due to the other organizations inability to be honest and
- 14 -
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
professional with me. I could clearly see the end game and could quickly develop an alternative
so that I would meet the successful criteria of the project.
Eventually the word limit within each stage of the report was achievable as I learnt to self-edit
and become more economical with the language I used. It became important to improve my
vocabulary so that my writing would be sharper so that my writing would not exceed the word
limit. I did struggle with this in the beginning but improved as the project continued and I
enjoyed making my writing better.

The e -mails from my supervisor helped me to keep on task and to organize my work better. The
communication via e -mail was invaluable as it saved a lot of time in the planning process and
meant that my revisions to my product could be done quicker because of the speed at which my
supervisor replied. Communication with my supervisor meant that I did not feel confused or lost
when things went wrong with the first product and I could respond in immediately when it
became obvious of that the first product was going to fail. At that point I felt depressed and the email from supervisor renewed my motivation. I learnt from this process that communication was
essential in running a project and that without it the milestones for completing certain elements
of the product would not have been met. E- mails are an important tool in project management.
The evidence for the e -mails is the folder I made in my hot mail account (PP) and the screen
shots of the e mails that I e mailed the teacher.

My personal project Idea is to create flashcards that will teach children the
basics of how to be safe in their daily life.
I chose Human Ingenuity and Health & social education as the Area of
Interaction for my project in order that the children interact with their
communities in a safe and thoughtful way realizing that there are
consequences for their actions and that if they do not make wise choices
then there will be negative effects.
The reason why I chose both of these Area of interactions because it is
teaching the children to think about the consequences of their actions and
this is in tune with human ingenuity, to be able to make connections with
dangerous situations and how to respond to them in order to keep safe.
The reason why I choose the are of social education is that it is important
for the development of the child to develop the concept that their actions
effect the community around them. Also they need to be able to learn to
communicate with their peers in a spirit of cooperative learning.
- 26 -
Ghada Al Maadeed 10D
The AOI task is evidence of thinking skills in the areas of health and social education and in the
area of human ingenuity. The evidence for this is the creation of the flash cards after the first
product failed. I felt that thinking outside of the box in order to come up with a second product
has taught me an important life lesson to believe in myself and that I work well under pressure. It
is important to be able to learn these social and personal skills because it will improve my
performance in all my school subjects. The human ingenuity means that I know that I can
develop and manage other projects. The social education has given me the ability to be able to
find solutions that will make it easier for the preschool children to learn how to be safe in their
communities.

The web site was another important way of communication. Mrs. Stafford the pre-school teacher
uploaded the flash cards on her wiki page and can be found on the pre school 3 & 4 wiki page.
This was again important for the development of the second product The communication here on
this web page had the affect that I felt my supervisor and I worked effectively as a team. It was
with this communication that impressed me the most as I had been feeling lost at this point in
time. It was an effective use of communication that essentially meant that I could complete my
product on time. This was an invaluable tool without which I would have not been able to have
done my second product. This web page is evidence of collaboration between my supervisor and
myself to create a successful goal.
