EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Annual Basin hydrological report aims at providing the overall status of hydrological condition of the
Lake Rukwa Basin. This report gives information regarding climate and surface runoff data for the period
between November 2012 and October 2013.
Lake Rukwa Basin is located in the south-western part of Tanzania and is part of the East African Rift
Valley with Lake Tanganyika on the northwest and Lake Nyasa on the southwest. The area of Lake Rukwa
strides the regions of Mbeya, Katavi and Rukwa. Lake Rukwa which is the largest surface water body in the
basin is an inland drainage sink with no outlets. The lake is quite shallow with mean depth of 4 m.
The basin has 9, 14 and 26 meteorological stations, rainfall stations and river gauging stations for data
collection respectively which are located in different areas in Mbeya, Mpanda, Nkasi, Chunya and
Sumbawanga districts. At present, the Basin has no groundwater monitoring wells but the process to
establish them is ongoing.
In the reporting period, the annual rainfall for the Basin was less or more equal to the long term mean
annual precipitation.
At greater extent, Lake Rukwa Basin Water Board has managed to construct automatic water level
recorders in 20 river gauging stations, 6 automatic weather stations and 2 automatic rain gauges. Temporal
and spatial data are available and some samples have been provided to give an overview of the real
situation to the reader.

1 Introduction
1.1 Objectives of the Report
The main objective of this report is to give an overview of status of 2012/2013 hydrologic year
(November 2012 to October 2013). Specifically the report aims to give information about
hydrology of the basin utilizing the following collected data:
a) Climate data
b) River Flow data
c) Water Quality data
d) Lake/reservoir/water levels
1.2 Background Information about Lake Rukwa Basin
Lake Rukwa Basin is located in the south-western part of Tanzania and is part of the East
African Rift Valley with Lake Tanganyika on the northwest and Lake Nyasa on the southwest.
The area of Lake Rukwa strides the regions of Mbeya, Katavi and Rukwa. Lake Rukwa Basin is
found approximately between latitude 6 0 5’ S and 90 10’ S, longitude 300 E 25’ and 340 00’ E.
It is an internal drainage system which is described by all catchments of rivers flowing into the
lake with no outlet. Lake Rukwa Basin has six catchments with sum of 88,000 Km2 Catchments
area. Rivers that are flowing in are Rungwa, Wuku, Lukwate, Kikamba, Luika, Luiche, Kavuu,
Chambua, Momba, Lupa and Songwe. The Lupa, Chambua, and Songwe Rivers drain the
Mbeya Range and flow into the lake from the south, the Rungwa feeds the lake in the north, and
the Momba River flows in from the west. In addition, there are several ephemeral rivers that
flow into the lake during the wet season.
1
Figure 1 : Location of Lake Rukwa Basin and its catchments
1.2.1 Geology
The Rukwa basin can be divided into three geological age groups, i.e., the Karroo sediments, the
Neogene deposits, and the Cambrian rocks. The pre-cambrian rocks are collectively referred to
as the basement complex and they occupy about 68 % of the entire basin. They are therefore the
most important geological unit in the basin followed by the Karroo sediments which include the
2
lake beds found in Rukwa trough and predominantly consist of soft sandstones, silt stones, and
tuffaceous sediments.
1.2.2 Water Quality
Surface Water Quality
The main water quality problems in surface waters are with respect to physical and
bacteriological characteristics. During the rainy season, the rivers have strong earthy colours, are
highly turbid and have heavy loads of suspended solids and debris. The waters are also highly
contaminated with bacteria of faecal origin due to poor environmental sanitation in the basin.
The water quality improves considerably during the dry season, when low flow velocities allow
sediments to deposit, and when groundwater discharge – which is free of physical quality
problems – makes a significant contribution to stream flow.
Groundwater Quality
Groundwater is an important source of drinking water, especially for the rural population in the
basin. A number of urban areas such as Sumbawanga, Mpanda, and Tuduma also depend on
groundwater for their water supplies. In Rukwa Basin the geology is the most important factor
determining groundwater quality. In the ancient crystalline basement found in most parts of the
basin, groundwater occurs mainly in joints and fractures in the parent rock, and in the highly
weathered regolith zone. Groundwater also occurs in the rift valley sediments. Groundwater from
the ancient crystalline basement typically has high alkalinity, high levels of sodium, and a
reaction ranging from mildly acidic to strongly alkaline. The waters also vary from soft to highly
mineralised.
2 Water Resources Monitoring networks
2.1 Meteorological network and Manual Rainfall Stations
In the current reporting year 2012/13, there are 7 manual rainfall stations out of 14 stations
which are working and 3 automatic rainfall stations but one was not working. Also, status for
weather stations was that out of the 9, 6 are fully operational, 2 station only automatic rain gauge
is working and the remaining one only standard rain gauge is working. As a result, data of
rainfall for 12 stations are available and presented in this report.

3 Main Hydrological Characteristics of the Basin
3.1 Climate
Generally the climate of Lake Rukwa Basin is tropical and wet. There is one rainy season with
most precipitation falling from November to April, although the Ufipa Highlands also experience
rains in May and October (very rarely). Average annual rainfall ranges from about 650 mm in
the south of the basin to about 900 mm in the north to about 2,500 mm in the Ufipa Highlands.
The year under review has experienced inadequate rainfall in most part of the basin. The dry
season in most parts of the basin starts from around June to September. Data collection was done
at different stations in the basin and presented in this report.
In the southern portion the mean annual temperature is 21 oC, with a mean maximum in the
warmest month of about 28 oC and a mean minimum in the coolest month of 12.7 oC.
Temperatures across the basin are moderately hot during the period from August to December
and fairly cold in June and July with the rest of the year being fairly warm.

 The table above and graph below show that in Rukwa and Katavi region the rainfall received
in 2012/2013 was above the average compared to MAP for the four representative stations.
In Mbeya region the rainfall received was less or more equal to calculated long-term average
for the four representative stations. These mean that Mbeya region received average rainfall
for hydrological year 2012/2013.

3.2 Hydrology
The basin is characterized by seasonal rivers, perennial rivers and one Lake. The basin has a little
drainage area of 88,000 km2 in which the Rungwa River with catchments of 20,000 km2, mainly
in Chunya district is the largest covering about 25% of the total basin area. Other river systems in
the basin are the Songwe from the Poroto mountains, Momba, Mtembwa and other small
numerous rivers both in the east and west of the lake. Others are Muze, Katuma and Luiche
originating from the Ufipa plateau. Most or almost all the Rivers have variable flows which rise
and fall with the rains in between the months of November and May.
3.2.1 Surface water data
In this report (2012/13) data were collected from all working stations except Mbalizi River at
GNR, which are water levels only. All stations whose data was collected had no current rating
curves to convert them into flows.
15
3.3 Water quality
Water quality in the Basin is threatened by large amount of dissolved solids in the groundwater.
Agrochemicals such as sulphate of ammonia, calcium ammonia nitrate, super phosphates and
urea in rivers which comes from agricultural yield in the basin.
Collection and analysis of water quality data in this reporting year was done as annex 5.3 shows.
4 Water Resources Planning and Development
4.1Water Allocation
In the reporting year, the basin has identified 80 new water users for revenues collection where
by 65 applications have been processed and 57 water permit have been issued. The total of
1955.9m3/sec in 2012/2013 of water have been taken from the corresponding source to the users.
5 General Remarks and Way Forward
In order to monitor and evaluate hydrological data monitoring, regular daily water levels and
discharge measurements should be taken at different times of the year for hydrometric stations.
Since functions of hydrology in Lake Rukwa Basin had stopped for many years ago, there is a
need to be reactivated for the good future of hydrology and water resources management and
development.
In coming days we do expect to do the following as a way forward






Carrying out flow measurement during low, median and high flow in order to update or
validate the existing rating curves.
Carrying out gauge check survey and cross-sectional survey before and after rain season
Carrying out sediment sampling to rivers which are highly affected by sediment load and
at Lake
To establish a height Area Volume Relationship of the Lake (Lake Bathmetry)
Visiting of gauging and met station is preferably after every three month in order to
check the condition of the stations as well as to exchange ideas with gauge readers and
observers.
The problem of vandalism due to the business of scrapers is needed to be sorted out for
sustainability of the monitoring stations.
