AP Bio Lab Investigation 7 Meiosis 2015
Due date:
Name: ________________
Objectives

To be able to identify and demonstrate the stages of meiosis.

Demonstrate crossing over in Sordaria and relate it to map distance.

To understand the significance of meiosis and crossing over as it relates to genetic variability.

Understand how tumor suppressor genes work.
Part 4 Modeling Meiosis
QSet 1; Answer the 12 questions on page 93
Simulation of Meiosis– location: lab table with beads
Use the beads to manipulate your way through the stages of meiosis and mitosis (if you didn’t already do mitosis). I will try to
observe each of you.
Once you can manipulate the beads, you will make a diagram of meiosis on a sheet of paper (set up as below):
Meiosis Drawing

5.
Each box will be used to draw and describe a different stage of cell division.
Your 8 boxes should include; prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase of meiosis I, and prophase, metaphase,
anaphase, and telophase of meiosis II. Show two cells at the end of meiosis I, but you can start meiosis II with one cell.
Be sure you understand what does and doesn’t take place during interphase and interkinesis.
Use the markers or colored pencils to depict the chromosomes. Your animal has a total chromosome number of 6.
You will need to decide how to arrange the chromosomes as far as size and color.
Work your way through the entire cell cycle using a circle to depict the cell membrane, another circle to depict the
nuclear membrane (where applicable), Show what the chromosomes are doing at each stage.
Be sure to label everything, such as, centromeres, asters, spindle fibers, centrioles, homologous pairs, sister chromatids,
chromosomes, chromatin, cell membrane, nuclear membrane, nucleus, nucleolus, metaphase plate, cleavage furrow,
daughter cells, diploid vs. haploid cells etc. You don’t have to label each thing in each picture, but everything should be
labeled at least once.
Part 5 Crossing Over in Sordaria –location: rear counter
QSet 2; Answer the 3 questions on page 94.
QSet 3; Work your way through the power point to understand the life cycle of sordaria. Use the power point slides or the
index cards to count asci (count at least 50 asci). Record your results from page 95 here.
QSet 4; Answer “Evaluating Results” Questions (6) on page 96.
Explore One Tumor Suppressor Gene
Research one tumor suppressor gene and write a one page paper (single spaced, font size 12) describing how it interacts with
the cell cycle to bring about change. Include at least one picture or diagram (does not count towards the one page min).
