 A major epidemic of
Diphtheria broke out in
Alaska
 What is Diphtheria? This
was a serious bacterial
infection usually affecting
mucous membranes in
your nose and throat. This
typically caused fevers,
sore throats, swollen
glands and weakness.
Today, Diphtheria is
extremely rare because of
vaccinations against the
disease.

 The main idea is the most important idea in a paragraph, a
passage, or selection.
 Supporting Details are facts or examples that explain or
support the main idea.
 The main idea is often stated in the topic sentence or
somewhere else in a paragraph.
Main Idea & Detail Example
 Dogs were the first animals to become domesticated. The
relationship between dogs and their owners benefits both
parties. People love and care for their dogs. In return, dogs
provide affection, loyalty, and companionship. When there is
danger, however, the roles can change. It may be the dog that
finds a missing child, warns a family of fire, or leads a lost hiker
to safety.
