Definition

A type of poem where the first, last, or
other letters in a line spell out a word
or phrase. The first letter is more
commonly used in an Acrostic Poem.
Example


So when creating one of these poems,

Thinks of a fun theme or topic you can use.

I chose to make mine on Acrostic poems.


Haiku
Definition

A Japanese poem, similar to a Tanka.
A Haiku is a three lined poem that can
be written about many different
things. Line one has five syllables, line
two has seven syllables and line three
has five syllables.
Example

A haiku can be (5)

Very difficult to write (7)

When you cannot count (5)
Limerick
Definition

A Limerick is often a funny poem with
a strong beat. They often start with the
phrase “There was a ..”and ends with
a name, person or thing. It follows the
rhyme scheme of aabba.
Example

There was an old man with a beard

Who said, 'It is just as I feared,

Two owls and a hen

A lark and a wren

Have all built their nests in my beard!
Ode
Definition


An Ode is a lyric poem that usually
addresses a particular person or thing.
Odes use metaphors, similes and
hyperboles.
Example

My Dear Students…
Travel the world, read lots of great
books, watch lots of great movies, eat
lots of great food and meet lots of great
people. Experience is the best teacher,
and the world is the greatest classroom.
Tanka
Definition


A Japanese poem similar to a Haiku
with two additional lines.
This poem consists of five lines. Lines
one and three are five syllables while
lines two, four, and five are seven
syllables.
Example

A Tanka is short (5)

But long enough to tell others (7)

What is on your mind (5)

Even if it is pointless (7)

It will mean something to me (7)
Diamante
Definition

The poem is in the shape of a
diamond that follows a certain layout;

Line 1 is the beginning subject. Line 2
contains two words that describe line
one. Line three contains three words
doing line one.

Line four is a short phrase about line
one and a short phrase about line
seven.

Line five contains three words doing
line seven. Line two are two words
about line seven. Line seven is the end
subject

Senryu
Definition


Example
A senryu is a 17 syllable poem. It is an
unrhymed Japanese verse that
consists of 3 lines and 17 syllables.


Lines one and three have five syllables
while line two has seven syllables.


Sonnet
Definition



A Sonnet is a poem of an expressive
thought or idea made up of 14 lines,
each being 10 syllables long.
Its rhymes are arranged according to
one of the schemes which is three
quatrains followed by a rhyming
couplet.
The rhyme scheme is
ababcdcdefefgg


I met a traveler from an antique land (A)

Who said: Two vast and trunk less legs of stone (B)

Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, (A)

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, (B)
