MUSEUM OF ME Katelyn Allen WHAT IS DESIGN? • Design can be defined as a plan or drawing produce to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is built or made. After taking this class, I’ve learned it’s more than that. • In this class, I’ve learned that design is in everything. You can find it in almost any field. • In my field of study, marketing, I can definitely see where design might come in. • Designing ad campaigns • Logo and brand generation • Designing of marketing plans WHERE IS DESIGN GOING? • In the next 20 years, I see design becoming more and more related to technology. • I believe that corporations will definitely begin leaning towards making design more affordable. • For example, Apple Products. These 20 artifacts represent me completely. I have divided them into 6 different themes including: accessories, technology, mobility, places, and hobbies (objects representative of the hobby). Some of the objects fit into more than one theme, like the headphones. They can also be considered an accessory, but I felt that they best fit in the technology theme. ACCESSORIES ACCESSORIES • These 5 artifacts I’ve chosen to represent myself are significant in my life in a few ways. • Pandora Bracelet • Each of the charms represents something about myself • • • • Glasses Cross for my faith Owls because they’re adorable A lucky charm from my grandmother wishing me luck at UK. • What connects me to the world around me—allows me to actually see it • Class Ring • Representative of who I am • Reminds me of where I came from • Vans • Comfortable for walking on campus • Match everything • Wear them almost everyday • Vera Bradley Backpack • Keeps me organized • My whole life is inside it TECHNOLOGY TECHNOLOGY • Each of these objects fit into the technology theme and are essential to my daily life. • Headphones • Allow me to listen to music on the go • Always listening to music • Sony Vaio • All my files are held on here • I always have it with me • iPhone 6 • Keeps me connected • Good for emergencies • Personalized for my needs/wants MOBILITY MOBILITY • These 3 artifacts are not only mobile, but mutli-functional. • John Deere Tractor • Grandparents have a farm • Grandfather used to ride me around on the tractor before he passed away 10 years ago. • Reminds me of him and my childhood. • Water bottle • Convenience of packaging • Can have water anytime, anywhere • Kia Rio • Transports me to campus daily • Essential to being a commuter PLACES PLACES • These 4 artifacts represent who I am and where I’m from and are places that are very significant in my life. • RE/MAX Commitment • Real estate office back home • My first real job—made me realize that I wanted to get into real estate • My house • Has been my home for 14 years • Won’t ever be able to call somewhere else home. • Brandenburg, KY • Where I grew up • All my family is from here • Meade County High School • Where I graduated • Some of the best times of my life EDUCATION EDUCATION • Both of these artifacts are key in my life at the moment and my education and could both also fit under the “place” theme. • Carol M. I happen to have 2 of them. • Softball • I’ve played softball since I was 8 • Just recently began coaching my sister’s team • Crayon Art • The image I chose to represent this is my own design and creation. DESIGN ELEMENTS • Most of the artifacts I chose are very generic, but there are some similarities regarding design between a few of them. Both of these artifacts came from the mobility theme. They’re similar in that they both feature wheels, have light interior, round steering wheels, large windshields, A/C, and radio systems. DESIGN ELEMENTS Both of these artifacts fell into the place theme. As you may have noticed, both feature columns and have pointed roof features. MY DESIGN I did want to discuss what design is to me. I’m a very artistic and creative person, and through this class, I’ve learned that that is exactly what design is—creative and artistic. There are so many different processes and methods to design, the one I’m most familiar with being artistic design. I do understand that there are other design disciplines and a true exhibition of design is a convergence of more than just one discipline. Jennifer Tate, a designer we met, said that being an industrial designer has given her an appreciation for other disciplines and that she isn’t just an industrial designer, she can practice those other disciplines if she pleases! I believe that my appreciation for artistic design has allowed me to appreciate these other disciplines and truly understand the creative process.
