Executive Summary
The Cheney School District’s curriculum adoption cycle rotates through an approximate 10 year
cycle. The 2010 – 2011 school year marked the year for a K-12 visual arts adoption. This work
was conducted following the general guidelines by the Cheney Curriculum Council’s review
process (form 1123). The committee’s recommendations for visual arts curriculum are as
follows for all grade levels;



K-5 grades, Art Everywhere publisher Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt
6-8 grades, Understanding Art publisher Glencoe/Hill, Engaging Learners
Through Art Making publisher Teachers College Press, Experience Art, Bridging
the Curriculum Through Art publisher Crystal Publication and The Art Teachers
Survival Guide publisher Jossey Bass Publication.
9-12 grades, Art in Focus, SRA Art Around the World CD, Art Fundamentals, Art
Across Time publisher Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, Drawing and Painting Activities
publisher Crystal Publications and Drawing Inspiration publisher Delmar
Cengage/Holt.
In close alignment with the visual art adoption committee’s philosophy on improving visual arts
education, the committee has developed future goals for the district in the areas of curriculum,
instruction, assessment and professional development in visual arts. These recommendations
will guide the district’s work in improving the visual arts program for all of our students;




Curriculum: Cheney Public Schools will have a consistent elementary visual arts
curriculum and implement this with assured reliability.
Instruction: We recommend additional art teaching/coaching positions to provide
students with the art skills needed to enter art courses at higher levels. Funds will
also be available for replacement of consumable and supplementary materials.
Professional Development: Increase the time spent on visual arts training.
Assessment: Assessments for all grade levels.
3
Visual Arts Mission Statement
The visual arts are recognized as a core subject by the state of Washington and
Cheney Public Schools. Our schools support visual arts instruction for students
that develops a richer understanding of communication, perspectives, and cultures.
We recognize that the visual arts provide students with the skills they need to
express what can and cannot be said.
Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Benchmarks
Statewide academic standards have been developed for reading, writing, communication,
mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and health and fitness. We call these standards
Essential Academic Learning Requirements. They represent the specific academic skills and
knowledge students will be required to meet in the classroom.
The Essential Academic Learning Requirements are clear targets for students and teachers across
the state. The EALRs make clear what our students should know and be able to do as a result of
our educational programs.
The Arts EALRs, which include dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, are:
1. The student understands and applies Arts knowledge and skills.
2. The student demonstrates thinking skills using artistic processes.
3. The student communicates through The Arts.
4. The student makes connections within and across The Arts, to other disciplines, life,
cultures, and work.
The Arts EALRs and broken down in each Art discipline and by grade levels.
4
Committee’s Recommendations to Improve Visual Arts Education in our District
Professional Development/Inservice
On CCC day in August, we are planning an inservice for all elementary teachers. The
inservice will include a presentation by Heidi Arborgast from the MAC, grade level,
teacher lead time going over new texts and materials and a representative from the
publishing company who will be available to answer questions. The secondary art
teachers will also be meeting together to go over new texts and materials.
Instruction Recommendations
1. Elementary Level
Elementary classroom teachers will continue to deliver visual arts instruction to
students. A new recommendation is that our classroom teachers receive the
support and guidance of visual arts specialists working at our elementary schools.
This recommendation is based upon the results of our survey of classroom
teachers.
Grade K-2, 4 and 5 teachers will be provide a classroom based visual arts
assessment which is aligned with the standards in visual arts and assist teachers
with reporting student progress on the standards based report card.
The committee recommends that each elementary school have sufficient funds for
the replacement of consumable and supplementary art materials which have been
purchased to support the visual arts curriculum. Further, the committee recommends
that there be thoughtful distribution and management of these resources for the purchased
intent.
The committee is sensitive to current financial realities regarding staffing; yet, is
recommending to expand staffing for visual arts to include visual arts
instructional coaches (or specialists) at the elementary schools. We recommend
one coach/specialist for Betz and Salnave and one coach/specialist for Windsor
and Sunset. With the addition of the new elementary school, staffing would need
to be re-evaluated at a later date.
The committee is recommending professional development support to include the
expertise of our secondary visual arts teachers captured and delivered to the
elementary teachers utilizing current technologies. This will involve the
development and production of DVD’s of secondary student and/or teachers
teaching art lessons. We also recommend the District provide the secondary art
teachers one one-half day of release time each trimester for this work.
5
The committee further recommends that the inservices for visual arts be
prioritized by the District and buildings in support of the implementation of this
adoption. This could possibly include inservices at the end of each grading period
that would take place on a Friday collaboration day in each building. These
inservices would be lead by a building teacher focusing on art integration and
instruction.
2. Middle School Level
The middle school art course offerings and scope and sequence will be evaluated
each year to assess the need for additional courses or changes.
We recommend more instructional time (per day or per year) to provide more
time for the instruction and assessment of students in visual arts beyond the
current one quarter requirement at the sixth grade level. This would better prepare
students for success on the State mandated CBPA. This would also provide a
stronger visual arts foundation for students to build on as they continue to seventh
and eighth grade elective courses.
3. High School Level
The high school art course offerings and scope and sequence will be evaluated
each year to assess the need for additional courses or changes. Our initial
recommendations include a year-long introductory art course to be offered at the
ninth or tenth grade level for students interested in fulfilling their graduation
requirement in the visual arts. In addition, this year-long course would provide a
strong foundation of art skills and prepare students for advanced art coursework.
The committee is recommending that professional development funding be
provided to support three secondary art teachers to attend one art conference a
year; then report back to the other district art teachers. We recommend $1000 per
teacher per year for this purpose.
6
Assessment
Elementary
A district wide CPBA formal assessment will be given at grade three. This
assessment will be archived and reported to the state through the district
coordinator. This recommendation is in compliance with State guidelines.
Secondary
A CBPA formal assessment will be given by grade eight at the middle school and
by grade 10 at the high school. This assessment will be archived and reported to
the state through the district coordinator. This recommendation is in compliance
with State guidelines.
Five Year Goals
Elementary
 As budget would allow, we want to evaluate the need for art
coaches/instructor.

As the new elementary school is built, we want to see the project rooms return
to their original intent as multi-purpose space.
Middle School
 We want to continue to evaluate the need for increased teacher FTE.
High School
 The high school art teachers will continue to evaluate the art curriculum and
course offerings for the purpose of developing AP art classes.
All Levels
 We recommend that a steering committee be formed upon the completion of
the Visual Arts adoption so that the members can evaluate and plan for the
successful implementation of the aforementioned recommendations. Our
recommendation would be a half-day release in the Fall and Winter of each
year.
