Year 2/3/4 Big Write homework
L:I To write a persuasive letter
Your big write task this week is to write a persuasive letter to sweet shops
persuading them to sell Mr Wonka’s sweets. The sweets you are trying to sell
are called ‘Square Sweets that Look Round’.
This big writing task is based on the Chapter, ‘Square Sweets that Look Round’
This is a warm big writing assessment, which means support at home is allowed.
When completing your plan / draft you should think about:
 Who is the letter to? How do we start a letter? (Address, Date, Dear)
 How will the shop keepers know who the letter is from? (Introduction
paragraph)
 How will we persuade them? Why should they stock these sweets? (At
least 2 reason paragraphs)
 What facts and figures do they need to know? (price, size, amount)
 How will we end the letter? (Conclusion paragraph, Yours Sincerely)
When completing your plan / draft you should try to include the following
writing tools:
 A range of punctuation including: capital letters, full stops, commas in a
list, exclamation marks, questions and commas for embedded clauses.
Tip: Try and use rhetorical questions to persuade
 Imaginative vocabulary including adjectives, similes, metaphors
(exaggerate!)
Tip: In persuasive writing try and use ‘the power of three’ (three
adjectives used together to build up a powerful description)
 Accurate spelling.
 Connectives including: and, but, so, because, however
A simple example using these targets is attached below:
Mr Willy Wonka,

Dear Shop keepers of the world,
I am Miss Bestwick and I am Mr Willy Wonka’s chief chocolate and sweet maker
(I am in charge of his whole factory!). I am writing to you to offer you a chance
of a life time. As you may know, each year we invent over 200 new types of
sweets and chocolate and this week we have made something spectacular.
We are only offering this opportunity to 200 shops and fortunately for you yours
has been chosen as one of these. If you decide to sell our new inventions people
from all around the world will flock to you. You will make thousands of pounds
profit each year.
We have called our invention ‘Square Sweets that Look Round’. I know you will be
thinking if they are square shaped how can they be round like a circle too? But that is
not what they do! They have eyes and look around! These sweets have many uses and as
they are delicious too!
Children and adults can use these sweets to spy on people, to look over their shoulders
and to find lost items. Parents could even use them to check if their children are
actually hungry. Imagine this, there’s two television programmes on that you want to
watch. Well now you can watch them both! Are you sold with the idea yet?
They are small, square sweets. They have a spiral pattern and come in a range of
bright colours. They are as bright as a rainbow. This is so you won’t lose them if they
wonder off! They are as soft as a cushion and as chewy as chewing gum. Once you have
tried one of them you will be instantly wanting more.
We can offer you a bargain offer on these sweets. 100 sweets for £10. You can order
as many as you like but you can not sell them to other shops. If you decide to say no,
you will not be offered this opportunity again. I hope that you make the right decision.
Please write back as this offer only stands until Friday 16th October.
Yours Sincerely,
Miss Bestwick
