BELL RINGER- WHERE IS MT.
KILIMANJARO LOCATED?
Mount Kilimanjaro is
located on the border of
Tanzania and Kenya
approximately 3 degrees
south of the equator.
Knowing this what type of
weather do you think
you would encounter
while visiting?




The journey from the gate
to the peak is like traveling
from the equator to
Antarctica in a matter of
days.
Due to its proximity to the
equator, Mount
Kilimanjaro does not
experience wide
temperature changes from
season to season. Instead,
the temperatures on Mount
Kilimanjaro are
determined more so by the
altitude and time of day.

EQ: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
WEATHER AND CLIMATE AND WHAT FACTORS
DETERMINE CLIMATES?
READING CH 3 SEC 1 P. 74
1.
Describe the difference between climate and
weather.
Weather= is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time.
Climate= is the AVERAGE weather condition in an area over a
LONG period of time.
2.
What determines climate?
Temperature and precipitation
3.
What factors affect vegetation on a mountain side?
Elevation and precipitation
4.
What are prevailing winds?
Prevailing winds= winds that blow mainly from one direction
during a given period. Affect the amount of precipitation.
5.
How do ocean currents affect an areas climate?
As currents move they carry warm or cool water to different
locations. This can heat or cool the air above the water and
that air can affect the climate of that area.

DUCK ARTICLE SUMMARY

Write a two paragraph summary of this
article.
1st paragraph = tell me the main points of the
article. What did you learn?
 2nd paragraph= make a connection to what we
just learned about in ch 3 sec 1. Why should
people know about this?

VIDEO CLIP ON EL NINO AND LA NINA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gPFu5xOoLQ
 Define them.


El Nino=a warm ocean current that develops about every 412 years after late December along the coast of Ecuador
and Peru and sometimes causes catastrophic weather
conditions.



literally, the child, i.e., the Christ child, alluding to the appearance
of the current near Christmas
La Nina= A cooling of the surface water of the eastern and
central Pacific Ocean, occurring somewhat less frequently
than El Niño events but causing similar, generally opposite
disruptions to global weather patterns.
How do the affect climates?

Effects climates for a short period of time but happen
regularly so they are part of the climate.
