Wright State University Student Government
Resolution: Smoke Free Campus
Sponsors: Joel Parker, Assistant Speaker of the House; Kelli Paul, Vice President;
Deeply Disturbed,
That on average 400,000 people die in the United States from their own cigarette smoking and
50,000 non-smokers die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke1,
Fully alarmed,
That many buildings have excessive smoking that occurs outside of doorways creating extreme
secondhand smoke regions, including Rike Hall, Millet Hall, and Dunbar Library,
Deeply concerned,
That more attention is given to alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides
than smoking, when smoking kills more people combined,
Recognizing,
That over 75% of United States workplaces have smoke-free policies2,
Further Noting,
That 28% of college smokers began to smoke regularly at or after age 19, at which point most
were already in college3
Aware of,
The 1988-1989 University Task Force on Smoking as initiated by Student Government which
led to the banning of smoking inside of all campus buildings,
Taking into consideration,
That over 500 Universities in the United States are smoke-free campuses including well known
schools as University of Florida, Valparaiso University, University of Kentucky, Miami
University, Oklahoma State University, University of Massachusetts, Indiana University, and
University of Michigan4.
THE WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT GOVERNMENT,
1. Calls Upon the Faculty Senate and the Wright State administration to prohibit
smoking at Wright State University Main and Lake Campuses outside of defined
smoking zones.
2. Recommends six smoking zones to be located on Wright State campuses away from
pedestrian traffic in the following locations:
a. Main Campus: One outside of the Nutter Center
b. Main Campus: One in lot 20
c. Main Campus: One along Zink Road residential community
d. Main Campus: Three in the academic core of campus

3. Calls for Lake Campus Student Government to evaluate where smoking zones should
be located at Lake Campus,
4. Further Requests a committee be developed with students, faculty, staff, and
enforcement agencies to establish smoking enforcement policies by evaluating other
campuses with smoking zones to assess the best enforcement methods,
5. Urges a transition process of at least one year to allow current students to become
aware of this new policy and potential students to make their admissions decision
based on this knowledge,
6. Notes that this policy would apply to all students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors.
