TERRY BRAVERMAN EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS BROADCASTING

Terry Braverman received his degree in Television and Radio in 1960 and enjoyed a distinguished
professional career of 50-plus years in sports broadcasting for both public and commercial radio and
television stations from Michigan to Hawaii. His 38 years at MSU included hosting countless radio and
television coaches' shows, co-hosting a weekly live sports news and interview show on WKAR-TV, as well
as daily radio newscasts of varsity athletic news and play-by-play announcer for MSU men's varsity
basketball, hockey and football, including several NCAA national championship games. The intent of this
scholarship, created by Terry’s family, is to support meritorious students in their pursuit of a degree that
will enhance their chance for future success as on-air talent in sports broadcasting.

Established through a bequest from Larry and also gifts from many of his friends and family, this
scholarship recognizes the lasting impact that Larry had on Michigan State University through teaching
telecommunication courses and working with hundreds of students, teaching them how to edit, produce
commercials, conduct interviews, and more importantly, what it took to be a broadcaster. In honor of

toward becoming secondary school journalism teachers.

MARY GARDNER ENDOWMENT FUND

Mary Gardner joined the Journalism faculty in 1966 and became the first woman faculty member with
tenure. For 20 years, she ran a summer journalism workshop for El Norte, a newspaper in Monterrey,
Mexico, and with her help it became the most respected newspaper in Mexico. The fund supports the
Mary Gardner Scholars, a program that recognizes students in the School of Journalism who excel at
journalism and academic achievement. Funds also may be used for study abroad related expenses such
as travel and lodging, and one scholarship each year is used for study in Mexico.

Herbert J. Oyer Ph.D. began teaching at MSU in 1960 as director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic. He
went on to become the department chair and also served as Dean of the College and also the MSU
Graduate School. E. Jane Oyer, Ph.D. received her doctorate from MSU, served as a professor, and was
a forerunner for interests in lifespan development. Herbert J. and E. Jane Oyer set out to improve and
upgrade the speech and hearing program. This award funds an annual lecture which includes the areas
of speech, language and hearing. Lectures are not limited to any age group, but focus variously on the
entire lifespan to include children, adults and the elderly.
