“Two Hundred years of experience has proven that
there is no substitute for Cod Liver Oil. The
greatest scientists in the world have never been able to
produce a substitute for it. The most eminent
physicians in Europe and America have spent years in
a vain attempt to produce artificially a preparation that
would take the place of Cod Liver Oil.”
SCOTT & BOWNE, Mfg chemist New York
Dr. Royal Lee on Cod Liver Oil
“All natural vitamins are complexes. Natural vitamin A
contains a special fat soluble synergist that
physiologically lowers high blood
pressure just as natural cod liver oil
contains a synergist of vitamin D that
promotes the assimilation of calcium by
the body cells, whereas the pure
vitamin D will rob the cells of calcium.”
Address to the American Academy of Applied Nutrition
Huntington Hotel, Pasadena, California. May 24, 1953
Vitamin News
“It would seem that we are not justified in considering
rat units of Vitamin D in irradiated ergosterol as being
equivalent to the same number of rat units of Vitamin D
in cod liver oil as a curative or prophylactic remedy for
rickets.”
Barnes, D. J., (Brady, M. J. and James, E. W., Comparative Value of Irradiated Ergosterol and
Cod Liver Oil as a Prophylactic Antirachitic Agent When Given in Equivalent Dosage According to
the Rat Unit of Vitamin D, American Journal of Diseases of Children, 39:45, 1930
Vitamin D factor in viosterol and cod liver oil are not
identical. Ten times as many Vitamin D units in viosterol
do not give as much protection as plain cod liver oil.
(Abstract of DeSanctic, Rudolph and Craig, J. D., A Five-Year Clinical Study of the Prophylactic
Value of Antirachitic Agents, New York State Journal of Medicine 34:16, 712-714, 1934).
Vitamin News (continued)
Researchers have shown that the natural sources
of Vitamin D such as cod-liver oil, butter and yeast
also contain potent forms of Vitamin F. It is this
Vitamin F of cod liver oil that, no doubt, is
responsible for the vast difference between the
clinical performance of the cod liver oil and purified
or synthetic Vitamin D (such as Viosterol), that is so
well known today.
Dr. Royal Lee – Vitamin D
Conversations in Nutrition
April 1955
What do you think of vitamin D
preparations such as cod liver oil?
Cod liver oil is the best form of all for
vitamin D. If you get natural cod liver oil
that has not been meddled with or altered
or concentrated or enriched. It has been
proven very emphatically because in
treating surgical wounds they use cod liver
oil to speed up healing and it won’t work if
you don’t use the natural oil without any
changes.
Dr. Royal Lee – Vitamin F
Conversations in Nutrition
April 1955
What can you tell us about vitamin F?
If you use natural cod liver oil, you get the two
vitamins together ( D & F) and you never know they
existed. But when you take them apart and take the
synthetic D alone, then you are in trouble. Synthetic
vitamin D has killed thousands of youngsters
because it caused calcification of the kidneys and
created a vitamin F deficiency.
Are Your Patients Getting Enough
Vitamin A & D?
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
data, at least 50 percent of people in the United States
could be consuming less than the recommended daily
allowance of vitamin A. NHANES data also suggests that
almost all of us (90 percent) are deficient in vitamin D.
Products like Cod Liver Oil, with or without additional
supplementation, could help meet each
patient’s individual need.
Dr. Royal Lee – Vitamin News
Vitamin F, the fat-soluble growth principle found
associated with E, and acting to oppose the action
of Vitamin D in maintaining calcium balance in the
blood, appears to be the specific antidote for D
poisoning. It is apparently present in cod liver oil
and this would account for the great difference in
toxicity of cod-liver oil D as compared to irradiated
ergosterol.
Dr. Royal Lee – Vitamin News (continued)
Thus, if the diet is deficient in both fat-soluble
vitamins A and D, as for instance when olive oil
replaces cod liver oil, the following abnormalities
develop…
1.Thickening of the gingival region
2.Hypertrophy of the sub-gingival epithelium, with the
development of finger-like processes.
3.Irregular alignment of some of the teeth and tilting of the
teeth in relation to the jaw
4.Irregular thickness of the periodontal membrane
The Process
• Short path distillation is a method which removes
metals, PCBs and other toxins to below detectable
levels for human consumption. There are different levels
of Molecular distillation.
• Standard Process Cod Liver Oil is not
bleached with clays and does not go
through a deodorization or an esterification process
which will denature and refine oil as well as break down
triglycerides and separate the fatty acids from glycerine
Commercial Cod Liver Oil
Natural Unrefined Cod Liver Oil Has
More Than Just Retinyl Palmitate
Contains Naturally Occurring
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoQ10 is a fat-soluble substance used in the body’s
energy-generating processes. The minimal
processing selected for Standard Process
Cod Liver Oil has the beneficial effect of retaining
CoQ10 from cod livers.

Standard Process Cod Liver Oil
General Recommendations for Vitamin D
• Minimum blood levels of vitamin D should be above 29
ng/mL and optimal between 32-100 ng/mL
• Supplementing with 2500-3000 IU’s of vitamin D daily
for two months should increase to within normal levels
(this is not including all the other sources of D in the
diet or sunshine)
• Consider three Cataplex D and three CLO daily for
two months
• A maintenance dose of 1000 IU’s daily of vitamin D
from all sources

Research on Cod Liver Oil
CLO during pregnancy
Use of cod liver oil during pregnancy is
associated with lower risk of Type I diabetes in the offspring.
This effect was found only in mothers taking cod liver oil, not
in mothers taking multivitamin supplements.
Cod liver oil taken by nursing mothers improves the breast
milk by increasing the amount of fatty acids, which promotes
brain development, and the amount of vitamin A, which helps
prevent infections, but the level of vitamin D is unchanged.
Stene, L. C., et al. Use of cod liver oil during pregnancy associated with lower
risk of Type I diabetes in the offspring. Diabetologia. 43(9):1093-1098, 2000
Use of cod liver oil during the first year of life is associated
with lower risk of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes: a large,
population-based, case-control study
Use of cod liver oil in the first year of life was
associated with a significantly lower risk of type 1
diabetes (adjusted odds ratio: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.56,
0.99). Cod liver oil may reduce the risk of type 1
diabetes, perhaps through the anti-inflammatory
effects of long-chain n-3 fatty acids.

Low vitamin D status linked to
higher risk of diabetes
Deficiency in vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk
of developing type 1 diabetes, according to new research. The
study published in Diabetologia finds a correlation between serum
levels of vitamin D3 and subsequent incidence of Type 1 diabetes.
Led by Dr. Cedric Garland and colleagues from the University of
California, San Diego, USA, the team performed a six year
analysis of nearly 2,000 people — finding higher levels of serum
vitamin D3, known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], are
associated with a lower incidence of the disease. Therefore a
preventive roll of vitamin D is suggested

New trial shows Cod Liver Oil can reduce the need for
anti-inflammatory drugs without loss of pain-relief
• The results of a five-year study show that Cod Liver Oil can reduce the
amount of anti-inflammatory drugs taken by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
patients by over 30%.
• Results showed that by taking Cod Liver Oil daily nearly 40% of patients
were able to reduce their anti-inflammatory intake by over 30%. Most
importantly this study showed that the reduction in intake of antiinflammatory drugs in those taking the Cod Liver Oil supplements was
not associated with any worsening of pain or disease activity.
• This study offers hope to many Rheumatoid Arthritis patients for whom
Cod Liver Oil supplements can offer a natural pain management
treatment without the harmful side effects associated with the use of
anti-inflammatory drugs.

Patients on cod liver oil showed less pain and slightly less
interference with their normal activities than patients on placebo
• This study involved 26 osteoarthritis patients. Patients
received 10 ml per day of either cod liver oil or an olive
oil placebo plus their usual NSAID's daily for 6 months.
• At the end of the 6 month period, the patients on cod
liver oil showed less pain and less interference with
their normal activities than patients on placebo, though
the difference was not statistically significant.
Stammers, T., et al. Fish oil in osteoarthritis [letter]. Lancet. 2:503, 1989.
Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) from cod liver oil reduced aggrecandegrading enzymes and collagen-degrading enzymes in 86% of patients
• Authors conclude that cod liver oil retards cartilage
degeneration in osteoarthritis and reduces the factors
that cause pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis
patients.
• Omega-3 fatty acids in the oil appear to switch off the
aggrecan- and collagen-degrading enzymes that break
down joint cartilage, slowing cartilage destruction and
reducing inflammation, which lessens arthritic pain.
Caterson, B., et al. Arthritis and Rheumatism. Cardiff University, UK.
Cod liver oil intake during the previous week was associated with a 25%
reduction in patients reporting intense pain and a 19% reduction in the
number of patients reporting considerable/intense pain
• The object of this study was to investigate the
relationship between dietary supplementation of cod
liver oil and the intensity of pain in people with
musculoskeletal pain in a cross-sectional study.
• The study suggests that people with
musculoskeletal pain experience less pain if they
take cod liver oil.

Respiratory Tract Infections
• The authors studied the effect of daily supplementation with lemonflavored cod liver oil and a children's multivitamin-mineral supplement
containing selenium on the number of pediatric visits by young, innercity, Latino children from late autumn of 2002 through early spring of
2003.
• The supplementation group had a statistically significant decrease in the
mean number of upper respiratory tract visits over time; the medical
records control group had no change in this parameter. The supplements
were well tolerated; per parental report, 70% of children completed the
5- to 6-month course of cod liver oil.

The author reports that cod liver oil provides
substantial relief for autism patients
• I am using natural lipid soluble concentrated cis form of vitamin A in cod liver oil to
bypass blocked G protein pathways and turn on these central retinoid receptors. In a
few days, most of these children regain eye contact and some say their “box” of clear
vision grows. After two months on vitamin-A treatment some of these children, when
given a single dose of bethanechol [a drug related to acetlycholine, a substance that
transmits nerve impulses] to stimulate pathways in the parasympathetic system in the
gut, focus, laugh, concentrate, show a sense of humor and talk after 30 minutes, as if
reconnected. This improves cognition, but they are still physically ill. When these
children get the MMR vaccine, their vitamin A stores are depleted and they cannot
compensate for blocked pathways. Lack of vitamin A, which has been called “the antiinfective agent,” leaves them immuno-suppressed. They lack cell-mediated immunity. T
cell activation, important for long term immune memory, requires 14-hydroxy retroretinol. On cod liver oil, the only natural source of this natural substance, the children
get well.
• One week ago my oldest son, who is gifted but dyslexic, had twelve neighborhood
friends over for dinner. As I looked around the table, all of these children but one had
dilated pupils. After two-and-one-half months of taking vitamin A and D in cod liver oil,
my son announced, “I can read now! The letters don’t jump around on the page
anymore!” He is able to focus and his handwriting has improved dramatically.

Cod Liver Oil and Breast Cancer
In an on-going case-control study, researchers found that increased vitamin D, either
through sun exposure or dietary intake, reduced a woman's risk of breast cancer.
Thus far, the team has reviewed data from 576 breast cancer cases identified through
the Ontario Cancer Registry and 813 controls identified through randomly selected
residential telephone calls. The cases were diagnosed between July 1, 2003 and June
30, 2004 and were aged 20 to 58 years. Women who worked an outdoor job, which
would increase sun exposure, had a 40% reduction in the risk of breast cancer relative
to those who had not (95% CI, 0.48-0.75). Women who participated in outdoor
activities had a reduced risk of breast cancer. Women who participated in more than 6
outdoor activities per week between the ages of 10 and 19 had a 45% risk reduction,
relative to those who had fewer than four activities. Women who participated in more
than 5 activities between the ages of 20 and 29 had a 28% reduced risk relative to
those with fewer than 3 outdoor activities. Outdoor activities included both physically
active and inactive ones, suggesting that it was a link to sun exposure rather than
exercise. In terms of dietary intake, the researchers asked participants about cod liver
oil. Women who took cod liver oil for 10 years or more had a 34% reduced risk, relative
to those who did not (95% CI, 0.40-1.00).

Dear Standard Process,
As a mother of two children and a personal trainer, I knew the
importance of a quality omega 3 oil supplement, but your new Cod
Liver Oil far surpassed my wildest expectations.
My eighteen year old son has dealt with cystic acne for the last
four years. Dealing with the discomfort and self-image issues have
been a struggle for him. After speaking with a dermatologist, and
against my better judgment, we had considered prescription
medication for this condition. Although less than two weeks have
passed since he first started taking 6 Cod Liver Oil perles per day, we
noticed significant improvement within a few days. The inflammation
and redness have since disappeared and his skin is well into the
healing process.
No other changes were made to my son’s daily routine which
tells me the results we have seen in such a short time have come
from Standard Process Cod Liver Oil. Thank you again for your
commitment to providing another exceptional supplement…Cod Liver
Oil!
