Project Title: No Dead Zones Here: Designing a Wireless Network
Essential Question: How does a wireless network design affect worker efficiency?
Project Description: You work for HopperNet as a Network Technician assigned to a design
team. Your design team has worked together two years designing networks for clients.
afa
A client, Acme Corporation, needs a wireless network for its corporate offices. You have been
asked to design a wireless network that will allow Acme Corporation’s employees to move
throughout the building while remaining continuously connected via their devices. Your team
is competing against several other networking companies for the Acme Corporation’s job.
afa
Research, design, evaluate and communicate a proposal for a wireless network for Acme
Corporation. Steps in the design process may include researching various wireless standards.
Given the physical layout, determine coverage area within the building. The final written bid
will be delivered to Acme Corporation. The final bid will include:
• a hardware list
• mapped wireless access point (physical topology)
• performance expectations including fault tolerance
• total cost (including installation costs)
• justification for the design
No Dead Zones: Advisory response
• teams composed of 3-4 students because of the group
dynamics
• clean presentation important: employees good need public
speaking skills
• to whom it would be made: the CEO or technical personnel?
• Other considerations:
• network scalability (anticipating technology changes in next 10 years)
• physical barriers (steel racks, secure rooms)
• temperature or weather variations (accessing network outside on the
loading dock as trucks arrive)
• some wireless devices necessitate FCC licensing
• access to electricity for hardware
• securing the network
