COURSE DETAILS
BTEC Level 3 Creative Media Production
2 Year course
This is a practical course that will give you a understanding of the media covering radio
drama, drama, animation, advertising, filming, writing and photography .
As you carry out different activities, you will also develop skills in communication,
information technology, using number planning and teamwork.
Each tutor in the media team has a different specialist area; this will give you the opportunity
to develop new skills in a varied amount of different subjects.
You will be actively involved in filming, acting, making props/costumes, writing scripts,
creating storyboards, researching, stop motion animation, drawing, radio and much more.
All Coleg Gwent courses include a tutorial programme; this includes different activities that
you can get involved in as a group. There is no exam at the end of the course; you are
assessed throughout on coursework. More detail about this is included further on in this
handbook.
As a group and as a media department we will be organising educational visits that you are
expected to make every effort to part in
Additional support for full-time learners
In addition to assisting you to achieve your main course, we aim to give you skills which will
make you more employable or help you if you go onto further study. We provide an Induction
qualification which helps you settle onto your course and gives important information about
the course and the College. Through our tutorial system we develop your learning skills and
teach you to evaluate your own progress. You will cover areas relevant to your particular
course, along with topics which will allow you to broaden your knowledge and experience.
To be successful in work or College you need to develop additional skills. These include
communication, use of number, IT, working with other people, problem solving and continual
self-development. You may have GCSE English for example, but can you discuss a topic
confidently in a group? Can you apply the maths you used in school to day-to-day life? We
give you the skills to do this, and more, to ensure you have more to offer an employer or future
tutor than just your main course of study.
9
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Throughout your course you will be assessed in a range of ways, these include presentations, a
portfolio of work, educational visits, one 2 one tutorial and exhibitions.
Assessed work will be internally verified by another tutor to make sure the assessment
decisions are correct. An external verifier will then sample the work, usually at the end of the
year, before certification is awarded.
Deadline for Assignments
You must submit assignments on the dates set by the course team in the assignment
timetable.
If you are ill in the week an assignment is due, the assignment must either be delivered to the
College or posted.
NB
Remember to take a copy before posting. No excuses will be accepted for work that
has gone missing.
An extension for the assignment will only be given under special circumstance, which has been
agreed between the lecturer and the learner. Please notify your Personal Tutor if you have
problems or illness, which may prevent you completing an assignment.
If you find that you are behind with any assignments you must contact your Personal Tutor in
order to make a plan of action to help you complete your work. A formal progress review will
take place with your tutor each term.
The Assessment and Examination Appeals Procedure is available on the website, intranet and
in the Learning Centre.
10
LEARNING CENTRE
The Learning Centre is a place where you can find information, ask for advice on your studies
and produce your assignments. It provides you with an excellent environment for research and
private study.

small range of fiction. A number of daily newspapers and a variety of magazines and journals
are also available. Information can also be accessed via the PCs, many of which are available as
a drop-in facility. Each PC has Internet access and facilities for word processing, using spread
sheets, databases, graphics software, CD ROMs etc.
All of the Learning Centre staff are there to support you by helping you locate resources and
assisting with tasks such as photocopying, laminating and binding. The Learning Advisors in
particular can also help you with advice on study skills and provide support in preparing the
assignments for your course.

Internet is monitored. Learners must comply with the IT User Policy and not abuse this facility.
Disciplinary action will be taken against anyone using the Internet inappropriately.
CAREERS
Information is available on higher education and career choices. The Careers Office is located
in the Learning Centre. If you would like to speak to a Careers advisor you can make an
appointment in the Learning Centre. The Careers Advisor will also be visiting all tutor groups
during the first term.

Learning Support
Basic Skills Support
At interview or at the beginning of your course you will do a short literacy and numeracy basic skills
assessment, using a computer. This is a simple process and you will be given clear instructions on how
to do this. The results of this assessment will simply show if you need some extra support in literacy
and/or numeracy and has no bearing on you gaining a place on the course. Group support will be
arranged for you if you should need it. Other members of your course who need support will be in this
group. The support will be for one hour per week for literacy and one hour for numeracy. It is very
important that you attend support sessions as this will help you to achieve on your main course.
Supplementary Support
As well as the literacy and numeracy assessment you will be asked to do a short piece of free writing. If
this writing shows that you may have some difficulties with writing then you will have more support.
This support may be one to one with a tutor or you may work in very small groups. This support will be
one or two hours per week. Again it is very important that you attend these support sessions, they are
designed to help you achieve on your main course and to improve your skills essential for your future.
Essential Skills Workshop
The Learning Centre is based in room A1.14. You can drop into the Learning Centre to see the Learning
Advisors if you need some extra help with your course work or your essential skills. This is an
opportunity for you to receive help towards achieving your main course qualification.
It is anticipated that bite-sized lunchtime workshops will also be held to support your essential skills in
specific areas, e.g. the use of commas, fractions & decimals etc.
