[MAYOR’s ADDRESS]

[DATE]

Dear Mayor [NAME],

We invite you to participate in the Seniors Vote Flag Raising event on October 1, 2015 for United Nations

International Day of Older Persons, to celebrate the contributions and value that Canada’s older citizens bring to our communities and Canadian society. We invite you to address Seniors Vote members and media who will be in attendance as the key part of the event’s program.

Seniors Vote is a collaboration of 50 seniors, retiree, and advocacy groups who represent well over one million older Canadians [please see attached list]. We are raising common concerns and demands that particularly resonate with older Canadians:

Retirement security – increase to the CPP, restore OAS eligibility to 65 from 67 increase the exempt earnings band for GIS and prohibit retroactive erosion of earned pension benefits

Health care transformation – national pharmacare plan, supports for caregivers, and standards for post-acute/chronic care in the home and community

National Housing strategy – access to affordable and suitable housing, including seniors housing

Income inequality – adopt measures that reduce the growing income inequality among Canadians of all ages

Municipalities have an important role to work with other levels of government to ensure citizens can live active and healthy lives. Older citizens have built our cities and communities throughout their lives and continue to contribute as active community volunteers, caregivers, workers, business owners and citizens. The involvement of older citizens in the civic life of a city will become even more significant as urban populations age.

Seniors Vote will be raising flags in numerous cities and communities all across the country to celebrate the contributions of older Canadians and the continual valuable role they have in our society.
