You've just entered the real world of sports and entertainment marketing. Dream Machine,
Inc. is a sports and entertainment marketing company that serves college and professional
sports teams’ professional athletes, sporting events, sports arenas, and major sports product
corporations, as well as performing arts companies, television networks, and movie studios.
As an entry-level employee, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of clients'
projects.
SITUATION: Last year during summer break, you worked for a concession stand at a
local minor league ballpark. With interest in minor league baseball growing, along with the
winning stats of the team, attendance at the ball-park increased. The stand sold more T-shirts,
pennants, and caps than ever before. This year, your former manager has her hands full. She
remembers that you were knowledgeable about the Internet and wants you and Dream
Machine to develop a Web site for selling team merchandise, especially because the home
team may win the championship.
ASSIGNMENT (+90 points): Complete these tasks:



Plan a basic e-tail store with 2 unique features to attract your customers.
Estimate your start-up costs including: design, shipping, maintenance, and storage.
Create a spreadsheet in excel with this detail.
TOOLS AND RESOURCES: To complete the assignment, you will need to:



Conduct research via the Internet or possibly even by phone.
Visit other sporting-goods stores and compare the browsing experiences at each.
Use Word, and Power Point, and Excel for your spreadsheet.
RESEARCH: Do your research and find out the most important characteristics of good
sporting-goods Web sites (Dick’s, Sports Authority, or Modell’s):


Go to these similar Web sites and identify and assess their features.
Get cost estimates for designing and implementing basic Web sites with purchasing
features. This will require additional internet research.
REPORT: Prepare a written report using the following tools, if available:



Word: Prepare a written report with a site map outline and list of features, as well as a
market overview and customer analysis.
Excel: Prepare a chart comparing other competitor Web sites with yours. Prepare a
budget chart with your estimates.
Power Point: Prepare a 5-10 slide visual presentation with key points, some visuals, and
little text.
PRESENTATION AND EVALUATION:
You will present your report to the class and they will vote on your business plan. You will be
evaluated on the basis of the rubric on the reverse side of this page.
