Chapter 5: Rocks Vocabulary
1. texture- the size and arrangement of a rock’s grains or crystals
2. extrusive rock- formed on Earth’s surface, small or no crystals
3. intrusive rock- formed inside the Earth; large crystals
4. Porphyritic texture- large crystals on a background of smaller crystals
5. sediment- piece of rock (ex: pebble, sand)
6. erosion- moving of sediments by wind, water, glaciers, or gravity
7. deposition- laying sediments down in a new place
8. compaction- pressing sediments together
9. cementation- dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles together
10. organic (bioclastic) rock- made from, or by, once-living things
11. chemical rock- forms when minerals dissolved in a solution crystallize
12. foliated- grains arranged in parallel bands or layers
13. rock cycle- series of processes that change rocks from one type to another
14. clastic rock- forms when rock fragments are squeezed together
15. nonfoliated- has no layers
