A special welcome to our international
students from Denmark - Inge, Mette,
Mie, Michelle and Line. The students
are studying social pedagogy and plan
to work with people with disabilities
when they graduate. They are able to
work with people from their chosen
aged group from birth to aged care,
unlike Australia where we complete
degree and courses in either early
childhood, primary, secondary, and
aged care.
School Captains- Primary School
Congratulations to William Kerr and
Olivia Yealland for being voted in as
School Captains this year. Already both
Will and Olivia are doing a great job in
their roles.
New Building Upgrade
As of last week the plans were with
Penrith Council for approval. Hopefully
these will be approved soon. In the
meantime, we have had our first design
meeting and discussed issues close to
my heart - the colour scheme! There will
be two more design phase meetings
over the next month to finalise this part
of the project.
Staff Development Days
There will be an additional Staff
Development Day in term 2 this year for
schools to prepare for the introduction
of the Australian Curriculum in 2014.
I will also be putting in a request to the
School Education Director for Staff

so the teachers can attend the
Australian National Special Education

Hello from P11! In just a few weeks
we have been very busy and had a
few changes to our class. P11 were
very sad to say farewell to Bradley,
as he has left Kurrambee to live up
the coast and we were grateful that
he visited us to say goodbye. We
wish him all the best for the future in
his new home and at his new
school. P11 were glad to welcome
Joshh into our class and he has
settled in well with his familiar
teachers and classmates.
In our class we have 5 boys who all
love participating in rough and
tumble play when doing the class
‘obstacle course’ each morning.
Johnny’s favourite activities are
cooking and using the iPad, Cyrus
loves music and playing with the
train set, Saxon enjoys our morning
walks around the bike track and
bowling, Joshh loves swimming and
getting a foot massage, and TJ also
loves swimming and cooking.
This term, P11 are learning about
their ‘Identity and Values’ and have
already enjoyed sharing information
about themselves to create their
own ‘About me’ books. As we
investigate our Australian identity
and culture we will continue to
participate in cooking lessons each
Friday, focusing on traditional
Australian foods, such as Anzac
biscuits, lamingtons, pavlova and a
lamb roast. Yum!
P11 can’t wait to begin swimming on
Tuesdays at Halinda later this term,
and we are all looking forward to a
great year! From Kylie, Jenny,
Cyrus, Johnny, Joshh, Saxon and
T.J .
We are all very excited to be back in
P12. We have a busy class of 7 this
year with Antony, Damon, Liam,
Moonlight, Pauline, Thomas and
Tyra. We have been settling into
being back at school and enjoying
getting to know are new classmates
and staff.
As part of ‘Identity and Values’ unit
of work we have been getting to
know ourselves and each other. We
measured ourselves on a height
chart and found that Liam was the
tallest in our class. We are looking
forward to measuring ourselves
again later in the year to see who
has grown. Perhaps someone will
be taller than Liam soon!
We have also been exploring
numbers through our Numicon
shapes. We have all enjoyed playing
with the shapes and pegs and
getting to know them. They are
going to help us count, add and
subtract.
We are looking forward to a busy
year in P12.
Kurrambee Kapers – 1st Edition – 20th January 2013
Bradley enjoys the spinning dish at the YMCA
We have had a lovely settled start to
2013. Olivia, Jess, Jett, Bethany,
Ashley and Bradley have all
returned after a nice restful holiday.
We welcome Vicki Nargar to our
class and feel sure she will enjoy her
time with P13.
This year we are getting out and
about more, attending the YMCA
each fortnight and shopping each
Wednesday for our cooking program
on Thursdays. As well, Jett is joining
the senior school at the Sports
Centre each Friday afternoon for an
extra bit of exercise.
P13 students have helped plant a
beautiful flower garden in front of the
classroom and we are looking
forward to our dahlias and lobelia
cheering up everyone as they pass
by.
Our KLA unit for Term 1 is Identity
and Values and we are having lots
of fun looking at our names, our
gender, where we live, where we go
to school and what we enjoy in life.
So far, the students have done
some very pleasing work.
We look forward to a fantastic year
ahead and we will keep you posted
in the Kapers!
Leigh & Vicki
Olivia oversees the making of our heart-shaped pizzas
on Valentines Day
Welcome to 2013 and an exciting
year ahead.
In P14, we welcomed back Angel,
Luke, Cassius and Jack who were
very happy to see each other after
the holidays and Tina who is keen to
help them learn more this year. New
to P14 are Blake and Lihai, who are
settling in very well. Lastly we
welcome Ethan, a newcomer to
Kurrambee who is having fun
exploring the extensive playgrounds.
All of P14 have been enjoying
getting to know each other and
trying hard to remember everyone’s
names. We socialise best when
we’re dancing together.
Our first trip to the YMCA was
exhilarating and we practised
jumping, spinning, swinging and
hanging upside down like bats.
We’ve also all had a lot of fun riding
bikes, jumping on the trampolines in
the senior playground and sliding on
the flying fox.
P14 haven’t just been having active
fun... In the classroom we’ve been
enjoying playing some new addition
and subtraction maths games and
practicing our maths skills on
Mathletics. We’ve also been
studying our identity, all about
Australia and Australian animals.
Check out our cutting and pasting of
our faces onto Australian animals –
we look awesome!
To enhance our healthy lives we are
experimenting with having a fruit
break in our morning learning
session, whilst we listen to a story.
We are also looking forward to
helping with the Crunch & Sip
program…
We hope everyone is having as
much fun as we are and we look
forward to catching up with you all
around Kurrambee.
P15 is a very busy and exciting
class. We all love music and singing!
Viktoria also loves a massage on
relaxation Friday. James loves ‘You
Tube’ songs on the whiteboard.
Deana has been enjoying morning
circle and the songs we sing.
Nathan also likes morning circle,
especially when it’s his turn to do
something. Georgia has been
enjoying disco style music that she
can groove to and Lucas loves being
in the classroom. He also enjoys
painting and Wiggles music.
This term we are looking at Identity
and Values. We have really enjoyed
looking at photos of ourselves and of
our family. This week we are going
to look at photos of our bus drivers,
and be singing ‘The Wheels on the
Bus!’ P15 also like games and
getting stuck into the paint!
This term P15 will be looking
forward to visiting the YMCA.
From Nicy, Deidre, Viktoria, James,
Deana, Georgia, Lucas and Nathan.
Kurrambee Kapers – 1st Edition – 20th January 2013
Lucas and Nathan -
enjoy painting buses.
P18 would like to welcome you back
to school for another year of
learning, fun and excitement. We
are a beautiful class in the junior
school who are eager to jump back
into the new school year. The class
consists of 5 gorgeous girls–
Jessica, Leyan, Alexzis, Genieve
and Torah and 2 lovely boys–
Michael and Chris. The staff in the
room are Melanie, MJ (M,T,W)
Nicole (Th and F). We are also
extremely lucky to have our
attendant carers Alicia (T, Th, F) and
Kerrie (M, W). Yes it is a very busy
and exciting classroom!
This term P18 have begun work on
our KLA unit of Identity and Values
which focusses on learning about
ourselves, our families, our
community and our country. This
ties in nicely with our regular outings
to Penrith library that we really
enjoy. All the students love reading
the stories, using the computers and
seeing the community.
P18 have also been really excited
about our new daily ‘News’ program.
The students bring in their news
journal once a week which describes
a favourite toy, recent outing or
event. Each child comes out the
front and is assisted to tell the class
about their news. The class then
writes a recount which answers the
questions of Who? What?, Where?
And When? Torah especially loved
telling her peers about her family
holiday to Queensland. The staff
would like to thank the parents for
their support for this program.
P18 also enjoy participating in daily
fitness activities, painting, class
bowling, cooking and going to the
YMCA. We are certainly very busy!
We look forward to keeping
everyone updated about our
continued progress throughout the
year.
All the best from P18.
2013 is looking to be a very busy,
productive and fun-filled year in P19.
In our class we have 7 students
(Michael, Milly, Lachlan, Charlotte,
Callan, Hannah and Andy) with the
teaching staff of Heather, Janelle
and Alana (RFF). This term we are
also lucky enough to have Viv with
us who is completing her teaching
degree. Our class is a mix of old and
new faces to Kurrambee but we
have all settled in well as we form
new friendships and become familiar
with our new weekly schedule.
This year we are looking forward to
working towards our IEP goals
through a variety of activities aimed
at acquiring, maintaining and
generalising our myriad of skills.
Although most of our day is spent
working very hard on things such as
our communication, socialisation
and personal management skills we
have already managed to discover
some class favourites including the
Interactive Whiteboard, painting,
music and dance.
With many great days, weeks and
terms ahead of us we look forward
to sharing our 2013 adventures with
you in the near future.
Kurrambee Kapers – 1st Edition – 20th January 2013
Hello and welcome to M6. It has
been a very busy start to the year
and our program is already in full
swing. This year we welcome some
new students to our class. William,
Alex, Callum and Jake join with
Jenna, Jessica, Henry and Nicholas
to make up the students of M6. We
also have Natalie Gauci, Debbie
Cook, Allen Cullen and Sian Wilson
to help us as we go out into the
community and work on our IEP
goals.
This term we are focussing on the
unit of work “Living Sustainably”.
This is a great theme which includes
lots of OSSAs. We will be going to
Brewongle, Warragamba Dam,
Penrith Lakes and the Sita Landfill
and Recycling Centre at Eastern
Creek. In class we have already
begun to learn about how and why
we recycle and you can hear the
students using the phrase “reduce,
reuse and recycle” across the day.
As part of the unit of work we are
also looking at the science topics of
Energy and Water Conservation. We
have already constructed pinwheels
which use wind energy and we are
looking forward to building a car that
runs on solar energy.
Another area that we are focussing
on in M6 is “Healthy, Strong Bodies”
as part of our PDHPE program. As a
class we participate in a team sport
each morning after morning circle
before returning to class and
participating in a Crunch & Sip
program. We are proud to say the
students in M6 have a great deal of
sporting talent and we are hoping to
participate in some inter-school
competitions
as
the
year
progresses. (Allen has also taught
the students Level 1 Trampolining –
you never know we might have
some paralympians in the making!)
This term our sport program will also
see us bushwalking at Euroka,
climbing the rock wall at the YMCA
and participating in exercise at Don
Bosco.
The students of M6 have also been
busy working on their academic
goals. Many of the students have
‘money’, ‘time’ and ‘reading and
writing’ goals. The students all enjoy
working on the iPad and Interactive
Whiteboard to meet these goals and
at the same time they learn about
waiting, sharing and turn-taking. Our
community access program then
encourages the students to utilise
their skills in a community setting.
Wiliam, Henry, Alex and Michelle give a
presentation about “Energy”.
M6 have a great time developing their Volley Ball
skills.
Until next time,
Michelle, Natalie, Debbie and Sian
M7 have started the year with a
bang! Having 5 new students to
Kurrambee has made life interesting
as we are all having fun getting to
know each other. David and Luke
are old hands and are showing
Maddison, Madison, Kaleb, Rhys
and James the ropes.
Our program is moving along well
and the students are out and about
exploring the community, and
developing our social, road safety,
money and choice making skills. We
are also cooking up a storm in the
kitchen as we grate, slice, cut and
fold our way to making the most
delicious ham and salad wraps we
have ever tasted!
has a variety of talents - Gemma is
very helpful around the classroom,
Matthew and Jeremey keep us
going with their daily comments,
Chantelle and Hayden do a great job
focusing on their tasks, Ciara keeps
her bookwork very neat and
Brayden is excellent at piecing
puzzles together.
We are fortunate to have the lovely
Mie (Dane Student) assist us on a
regular basis and S3 look forward to
her time with us. Thank you parents
for your fantastic support thus far
and we look forward to meeting with
you. If you have any queries or
concerns please feel free to contact
me on the school number.
Thank you, Michelle & Victor
going to be growing our own garden
and have been learning about
compost on
the
interactive
whiteboard.
We will be participating in a lot of
physical activity this term as Audrey
and Lisa love getting the class up
and moving! We go for daily
walks/runs around bike track, jump
on the trampolines and go for
weekly bike rides. We also go to the
YMCA every second Monday and
Sports Centre every Friday. We
have also been participating in
duties at the work centre and have
all done our best to crush as many
cans and shred as many pieces of
paper as we can.
S4 is ready for a busy but fun year!
Welcome to S4 2013!
S4 has had a very busy start to the
year! Audrey Newton and Lisa
Horton began with a class of 5
students including Callum, Kathy,
Hasan, Prince and Luke. Sadly we
had to say goodbye to Luke early in
week 3 and he is now happy in his
new class.
S4 have begun to learn about
recycling and how to look after the
environment in our new unit of work
called ‘Living Sustainably’. We are
Hi everybody, we welcome you all to
2013 and wish you a very happy and
fruitful year ahead. S8 has seven
enthusiastic and very young
teenagers. We have already made
our friendship groups. Kevin,
Matthew and Corey have been
reunited after many years and are
catching up with old friendship.
Damon and Bailey have formed a
great friendship due to their
fascination for trains, whereas
Jackie and Keith go with the flow
and try to adjust with any group.
Hey!!! Everyone we must tell you a
secret, we are all blessed to have
Sharon Callander who has come
We will catch up again later in the
year and inform you all of our
fantastic achievements,
Bye for now - Leonie, Anne, Alana,
Inge, David, Kaleb, Luke, James,
Maddison, Rhys and Madison.
Victor and I are very excited to have
joined S3! We are getting to know
these wonderfully enthusiastic and
hardworking students and they are
also spending time trying to figure
out what makes us tick. Thus far we
have gotten off to a very busy start;
our timetable is a mixture of
exercise, desk work, art and craft,
cooking and community access. S3

working towards our goals. We are
doing in-school work experience like
car wash program, gardening,
shopping,
food
preparation,
swimming and potting and weeding
at the Secret Garden Richmond etc.
At times we have a bit of whinge as
Varinder and Sharon are hard task

are looking forward for a very
enjoyable and educative year. We

We’re off to a roaring start to 2013
and the team is coming together
nicely. Welcome back Adam, Drew,
Matty and Beau. We’ve got some
fantastic ‘new blood’ with the
addition of Luis and Dieter and Tori
has come back to us after a
reshuffle. So it’s all on for Red
Bucket Composting, the YMCA,
shopping at Coles, socialising at the
Cafe Kreme and cooking(we are the
best barbeque-ers) Secret Garden
excursions,
swimming
like
champions and Thorndale Work
Experience (for some) and sports
afternoons. Every day is a fun filled
learning adventure.
I want to
especially thank Mrs Josephine
James and my SLSO Ann

afloat whilst I undergo treatment for
breast cancer. Hopefully I’ll be back
on deck soon.

S9 has got off to a flying start this
Semester. We welcome Kurt, who is
returning to Kurrambee after several
years
as
an
educational
journeyman. The students have
done exceptionally well at Work
Experience at Thorndale Industries
on Fridays, and they have shown a
particular enthusiastic aptitude for

Kurrambee Kapers – 1st Edition – 20th January 2013
On Tuesdays we have the intrepid
Mrs James directing our domestic
skills program in the school Living
Skills Centre. The boys are learning
food preparation skills and the art of
bed making, as well as handy
cleaning skills. We are exploring a
range of ways to best use our new
iPads across the day. 2013 is
looking great!!!
We have had a few changes to our
class recently with some students
moving to new classes. We would
like to say welcome to Fahad and a
new student to our class and our
school is Khushi.
We are also very happy to introduce
Mie our Danish practicum student
who will be with us this term
assisting the students to work
towards their goals. This is a photo
of Mie and Lake working on an art
project.
Welcome to S17 for 2013.
S17 is made up of fabulous
students: Tommy, Ryan, Sai,
Lauren, Natali and Sariah. The staff
are Margaret and Natasha with
Mette in the class on a Tuesday and
Friday. We are going to have a very
busy year with the all work and fun
activities we have to get through.
We are all enjoying playing and
listening to music. It has become the
classes’ favourite activity. We are
working on a unit of work called ‘All
about Me’ this term.
and distribute the fruit throughout the
school. We are also currently
investigating ways to increase the
students’ access to water throughout
the day.
Increasing physical activity for all
students is another area of focus for the
committee. At Kurrambee we currently
have a sports ability kit which allows
students with disabilities to access a
variety of modified sport activities. This
kit includes sit-down volleyball, polybat,
table cricket and boccia. This year we
will purchase some new sports
including hockey and goal ball. The
committee also encourages classes to
plan for physical activity each day and
to use physical activity as a reward for
students. Special events such as a Staff
vs Students sport day are also planned
for 2013.
The Kurrambee Vegetable Patch is also
rapidly growing and we are hoping to
rely more and more on the garden to
produce vegetables for our cooking
programs. If anyone has a “green
thumb” and would be keen to help
expand, plant, care for or harvest the
vegetables let Michelle or Varinder
know. Volunteers are always welcome
in our Vegetable Patch.
This term we are looking at the life
cycles of plants, insects and animals
as well as the water cycle. I will be
sure to keep you updated on our
gardening attempts and other
projects we will be embarking on.
Other activities we will be involved in
include the Liberty Swing, and here
is a photo of Jordan requesting to
finish his turn on the Liberty Swing
after much laughter.
Jenna and Callum practise their basketball skills.
Finally I would like to introduce our
year 12 students Corey and Caitlyn.
2013 is shaping up to be another
wonderful year at Kurrambee.
Kurrambee Kapers – 1st Edition – 20th January 2013
This year we are proud to see the
continuation and expansion of our “Live
Life Well @ School” committee. There
are two aims of this committee, first to
improve the nutrition of all students and
second to increase every student’s
engagement in physical activity. We are
very excited about some of the things
we have already put in place. Each
week every student will participate in a
Crunch & Sip program. S8 and P14
have kindly offered to help collect, cut

Continence
Children who are 3 years and over
may be eligible to receive nappies
through Enable. If your child has a
neurological condition (e.g. brain injury,
spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, spina
bifida, etc.) or has a foreseeable
permanent issue with continence and
they are wearing a nappy or have
continence needs, talk to one of the
Clinical Nurse consultants, your doctor
or Therapy service provider for
information. Families may now receive
1080 nappies per year which,
depending on their size, can save them
at least $760 per year. Once the child
has turned 5 years old, they are also
eligible to receive federal funding
under the CAPS (Continence Aids
