Regions Part Two
You work for the Office of Economic Development for your region. The purpose of your office is to persuade business to move to the region. When they
relocate to your region, the businesses bring more jobs for your citizens and more tax dollars to support the local and state economy.
You need to create a presentation that would convince the president or owner of a business to relocate their company to your region.
You will create a presentation to pitch the region in an organized way that includes enough information to persuade the business people to relocate to the
region. You will need to include what region you’re talking about, location on a map and characteristics of that region (climate, major physical features,
natural resources.)
Your presentation should include a 20 minute presentation and materials to display and distribute to the panelists.
The following companies will be represented on the panel:


















Owner of several large farm interested in developing their business with new crops
Hotel owner who wants to start a new hotel
Fisherman who want to extend his fleet of boats
Oil tycoon in search of new sources of energy
Natural gas company in search of new source of energy
Your company employs mining engineers to study all phases of extracting mineral deposits from the earth.
You manufacture computer chips that make Smartphones work
Your company develops video games and computer software for schools
Shipping company who imports and exports goods from around the world
Veterinarian of large farm animals who just graduated college and is looking to start up their own business
T-shirt vendor who wants to start a chain of stores to sell of T-shirts that are marketed to tourists
Marine biologist who has won a grant to study and research marline life
Banker interested in expanding his chain of banks
Ski instructor interested in starting his own ski school
Your engineering company employs agricultural engineers who develop products to support farmers
Your biotech company employs biochemical engineers that clean up contaminated soil and water
Your company employs Biomedical engineers who develop new medical instruments
Your construction company employs civil engineers who civil engineers who oversee the construction of highways, skyscrapers,
railways, bridges, and water reservoirs,
CEPA Teacher Instructions:
- Introduce the task
- Give directions and expectations of the assessment/project
o Review student expectations with GRASPS written below
- Introduce students to rubric
- Break students into region groups as appropriate (can be teacher or student selected, interest or
ability based, etc.)
- Facilitate student work based on student needs
Sample ways to meet students’ needs through differentiated assessment
Content
- Provide students with a template for presentation
- Give students photos or drawings to use on their
visual. You can provide students with examples and
non-examples are varying grades of detail and
appropriateness, depending on their ability.
- Assign one student to complete the same part of the
project for each region team. For example, student is
in charge of finding picture of one physical feature for
each region and placing on visual, or giving to group
members.
-Audio or video record instruction delivery for
students. Students can refer to instructions for
reminders during lesson.

-Dictate ideas to teacher/peer to write on visual

peer/teacher. Work with peer/teacher to develop
visuals or find online.

Grade students based on the quality, not
quantity, of work provided.
Presentation can be video taped prior to
presentation date, and viewed on video

Organize opportunities for students to present their information to an audience based on your school, timing and student population. Sample
audience participants could include:
o Parents, teachers or students during a school visit
o Students present to small groups of students
o Students present to other 4th grade classes
CEPA Student Instructions
Goal- Your goal is to convince business owners to move their business to relocate to your particular region.
Role- You are a member of the Office of Economic Development for that region. The purpose of your office is to persuade
business to move to the region. When they relocate to your region, the businesses bring more jobs for your citizens and
more tax dollars to support the local and state economy.
Audience- Your target audience is potential business owners.
Situation- You must to convince the business owners that your region is a place they want to establish their business!
These people need to be convinced that your region is the best place to locate their business. They will want to know the
following:
o How the climate might affect their particular business development
o Where their employees might live and what they might do for fun
o What physical features might support their business development
o What natural resources your region offers
Product- You need to create a presentation to pitch your region and present your information in an organized and
persuasive manner. Your presentation should include a Powerpoint and a written two page handout to include the
major points to distribute to the business owners. Your group should also have a display highlighting the groups
information.
Standards and Criteria for SuccessYour presentation and two page handout should:
o contain enough details to persuade the business owners to relocate to your region and know what to expect
when they do
o include information on the location, climate, physical features, and natural resources
o include facts about your region that support your pitch
o be clearly understood by your audience
