Summer Project: Re-inventing an Artwork
Painting or Drawing, Self-Portrait
Choose a self-portrait or portrait by a famous artist and then re-invent this piece to contain your own ideas
and style. Suggested artists: Chuck Close, Julian Kimmings, Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt, Jonathan Yeo,
Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Lucien Freud, Paul Gauguin, Andy Warhol, Frida Khalo, Suzanne Valadon, Tamara
Lempicka, Mary Cassat, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Susie Cooper
A4 Landscape format In your sketchbook or on paper plan your ideas - 3-4 sides, (work single-sided in your
sketchbook or on separate pieces of A4 paper) then make a painting or drawing (ANY SIZE – YOU CAN WORK
ON PAPER OR A CANVAS) – you may collect a sketchbook from Mrs Burden before the end of term.
Your planning could include:
1. Make a study of part or all of your chosen artwork
2. Analyse and describe the meaning or ideas that your chosen artwork is communicating
3. Plan your ideas to re-invent this artwork
E.G. ‘ the two Fridas’ by Frida Khalo (on the left) re-invented as a self-portrait with the student in it and objects
that relate to her life and interests. (artwork on the right by previous IB Visual Arts student)
