Elements of Music

Pitch
 The highness or lowness of a tone.
 The position of a note determines this element of music.
 It may be high like a tinkling bell or low like the sound of a
cannon firing.
Rhythm
 The element of music that deals with the beat or pulse of notes.
 This element of music has probably made you tap your toes or clap
your hands.
Melody
 An element of music that deals with the organized
progression of single tones and pitches.
Timbre
 Timbre is often referred to as tone quality.
 The quality of a sound that distinguishes one instrument or
voice from another.
Dynamics
 Dynamics are the element of music relating to the degree
of intensity or loudness in musical tones.
Tempo




Tempo is the rate of speed of a piece of music.
A metronome is used to keep this musical element.
If the tempo is slow it is called adagio and if it is very fast it is called
presto.
Harmony
 This element of music occurs when multiple tones are played or sung at
the same time
 It deals with blending chords to please the listener’s ear.
