anesthetic equipment. The hospitals in Dili or Banda have almost nothing to work with.
Basic surgical and dental equipment is in urgent demand. All equipment should be in
good repair, complete, and functioning properly.

Solar panels, regulators and batteries for the outlying clinics and health posts to power
SSB radios and refrigeration for medical storage.
Up to date medical reference works and training materials in Bahasa for nurses and
paramedics. Basic publications for midwives and health workers in Bahasa.
Educational materials
The educational system in Indonesia’s Eastern Islands is drastically under funded.
Teachers are dedicated but have little to work with. Very few of the schools are “fixed”
the rest are on a rotation basis where the teacher walks from village to village holding
classes. Almost every village has a wooden chest that contains the village’s precious
teaching materials. In one such village the chest contained 3 small stubs of chalk, one
dried up pen, and an old newspaper.

Someone said the best way to anticipate this section is to imagine yourself cast away on a
deserted island and what you would need to survive. The larger items are best purchased
in Jakarta.
Small scale fishing equipment of all types. Fishing is the main source of protein for 90%
of the people. Even a small box of hooks or a spool of line is often considered a treasure.
Casting nets are one thing we are often ask for. Hooks and other equipment should be of
the “commercial hand line” type and quality.
When our funds allow we try to also have basic farming equipment on board such as
shovel heads, axe heads, hoe heads, and the like. We only carry the metal parts, as wood
for handles is easy to find and can be worked locally. Machetes and large knives are also
in demand. (Best purchased in Jakarta)
Basic building and wood working tools such as hammers, nails, chisels, hand brace, saws,
are always in demand. (Best purchased in Jakarta)
Bright colored cloth and sewing materials. Needles all sizes, thread - different weights,
buttons.
Basic cooking equipment such as large pots and cooking knives.
