Prophecy

Significance

By 830 B.C. after the prophecies of

Joel:

Joel 2:21-32

Outpouring of the Holy Spirit; HS mission and blessings

From Creation to Prophets (Patriarchal and Mosaical)

Spirit of God had been involved in creation (Gen 1:1-2) and made and gave life (Job 33:4); Spirit had provided delivery (Judges) and messages of prophecy (Moses – Num 11:24-29), Samuel (I Sam 10:6); David (I Sam 16:13; II

Sam 23:2). Spirit had had specific, defined, limited roles; limited to specific persons w/ special roles.

Under the New Dispensation: (not called as such; referred to as “great and terrible day of Yahweh”

• Joel pointed to a time (during post-exilic restorative period 2:21-27)

• “all flesh” (God’s people from all ethnos/nations) would receive the blessings of the HS (Joel 2:21-27 =>

Acts 2:16,28). Immersion of HS signifying w/ a sign of God’s choice, designation, and blessing and approval - Acts 1:5; 2:1-4; 10:44; 11:5. All flesh regardless of age, gender – Acts 21:9; I Cor 11:5, and continues to this day though in more limited or ‘less directly observable’ manner.

• Joel pointed to the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the Old Law , and God’s judgment on Jewish order when he described clouds of smoke, darkening of the sun, moon as blood, etc.

• During Joel’s time Obadiah (17) prophesied that there would be those who would escape in the spiritual mount

Zion / Jerusalem (the church, assembly, Heb 12:18-29), with Joel complementing that prophecy with “Whoever shall call upon the name of Yahweh shall be delivered.” 2:32 – “among the remnant those whom Yahweh doth call.” (II Pet 1:3-4 & 3:10)

• Foretells the new dispensation of the law of Christ, the work of the HS in the apostles, prophets, evangelists and teachers of the 1 st word of God.

c. throughout the NT, and continues today through the inspired complete revelation of the

Yahweh (Joel); and that the Lord would come with myriads of His holy ones (angels) to execute judgment upon all and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness…(Enoch’s prophesy in Jude 14-15; a law of God and God as

Summary of “Firsts”: Prophecies of the Writing Prophets

Name Amos

Verse

Prophecy

9:11-15

(9:8-10 speaks of destruction of the kingdom of Israel but not all the people of the house of Jacob)

• Fall (physical) and restoration (spiritual [metaphor])of the House of David;

• II Sam 23:1-7 David died w/ no successor, saying he must wait;

• for “behold, the days cometh” (Amos 9:13) refer to the future time of the restoring “as in days of old” (as under

David), the closing of its breaches (torn house/Jeroboam, evil kings);

• under David there was one kingdom, ‘in that day’ ‘as in days of old’ there will be one kingdom of God’s people of

“all the nations that are called by my name” (Gentiles). By inference  one king, a new king of/over the House of

David (from Judah) w/ Jews and Gentiles being under the king/co-citizens in the shared kingdom.

Significance • in Acts 15 the House of David is spiritually restored as Jews/Gentiles in the new kingdom under the new king, therefore ~800 years later James quotes Amos (Acts 15, Jerusalem).

• James quotes Amos 9:11-12; fulfilled in Acts 15:16-18 following Peter’s work with the Gentiles and HS immersion on Cornelius’ household.

• ~ 755 B.C. Amos foretells that “in that day” (post-exile) the Lord will “build it as in days of old” (under David it was one kingdom); Acts 15:17 - “And I will set it up that the residue/remnant of men may seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called.”

• Written record prepares Jews for future terms and concepts: one kingdom, Son of David, Gentiles to be added

755 B.C.

Faithful Jews could have known: the Seed (of the woman, no fleshly father mentioned) would be male, of the flesh and lineage from Judah, a lawgiver and prophet ‘like unto Moses’; as vindicator/redeemer (Job) he would stand upon the earth; he would be rejected, crucified, resurrected, seated at the right hand of God (David, Ps 2,22, 16,110), that the great and terrible day of Yahweh would be during a time of post-exilic (Joel 3:1-2) restorative peace, prosperity, the old order will be abolished (3:16-17) as the HS will be poured out upon all flesh (Jew+Gentile/2:28-29); a remnant will call upon the name of Yahweh and be delivered (Joel); Amos: One kingdom (house of David) in post-exilic days

(9:14); deduced = one king; w/ Gentiles a remnant upon/by whom Yahweh’s name will be called (Amos 9:11);

Inferred: One will not be a Jew who is one outwardly; that the Lord will come with myriads of His holy ones (angels) to execute judgment upon all and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness…(Enoch’s prophesy in

Jude 14-15; a law of God and God as Judge inferred as early as Enoch. Since judgment of this kind is still yet to occur, one could conclude in 755 B.C. that a new kingdom/order, a new house of David under one king, requires a new law by which to judge ungodliness of Jews+Gentiles together.

Prophecy • Scattering and restoration of Israel; “not my people”; rejection of those having the law, Jew/Gentile the same

• a new covenant (first mention);

• restored as “my people” under their king called David (first mention);

Significance • Rejection of the Jews by God will class them with the Gentiles (not my people); both not His spiritual people.

• Both will require salvation on a common basis (those without law and those with law but were rejected)

• On the basis of all being lost, Paul quotes Hos 1:10 and 2:23 in Rom 9:24-26 to apply to Jews/Gentiles from whom

God called His new people; I Pet 2:9-10 – Peter summarizes Hos 1:10-11 & 2:23; having brought the gospel to the

Gentiles Acts 10:43 (prophets mentioned), Acts 10:45 = Amos 2:28-29 fulfilled.

• 2:18-20 a new covenant and new kind of covenant; first mention. Completely new relationship; new betrothal in righteousness, justice, faithfulness

• 3:5 “afterward” (exile) children of Israel shall seek Yahweh and “David their king” “in the latter days”

725 B.C.

Seed (of the woman, no fleshly father mentioned) would be male, of the flesh and lineage from Judah, a lawgiver and prophet ‘like unto Moses’; as vindicator/redeemer (Job) he would stand upon the earth; he would be rejected, crucified, resurrected, seated at the right hand of God (David, Ps 2,22, 16,110), that the great and terrible day of Yahweh would be during a time of post-exilic (Joel 3:1-2) restorative peace, prosperity, the old order will be abolished (3:16-17) as the HS will be poured out upon all flesh (Jew+Gentile/2:28-29); a remnant will call upon the name of Yahweh and be delivered (Joel);

Amos: One kingdom (house of David) in post-exilic days (9:14); deduced = one king; w/ Gentiles a remnant upon/by whom

Yahweh’s name will be called (Amos 9:11); Inferred: One will not be a Jew who is one outwardly; Hosea – Jew/Gentile will be called “my people” by Yahweh in a new covenant relationship, a betrothal relationship in righteousness, justice, faithfulness, where they are called sons of the living God, they shall seek David their king (one king over one kingdom, from

Judah); that this will be in the latter days (last order) where spiritual escape (salvation) will be(gin) in Zion.

that the Lord will come with myriads of His holy ones (angels) to execute judgment upon all and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness…(Enoch’s prophesy in Jude 14-15; a law of God and God as Judge inferred as early as

Enoch. Since judgment of this kind is still yet to occur, one could conclude in 755 B.C. that a new kingdom/order, a new house of David under one king, requires a new law by which to judge ungodliness of Jews+Gentiles together.

Is. 6:9-10 is Messianic in sense of it being quoted by the Messiah (Mt 13:14-15) and Paul (Rom 6:9-10) of the Jews

Verse 1:9; 10:20-22 a small remnant from Judah and house of Jacob will be left to be purged and redeemed

2:2-4 in the latter days the mountain of Yahweh’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains (mountain refers to government or seat of government – Jer 51:25); all nations (ethnos) shall flow unto it, bringing others along;

2:3 He will teach us His ways…for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.

2:4 His word to judge between all nations/peoples; a kingdom of peace and peaceful people (Jn 5:22-23); the law/word of the spiritual Zion/heavenly Jerusalem to obligate all nations, Heb 12:22ff)

4:2 in that day shall be the branch/growth/sprout of Yahweh

• The ‘Branch of Yahweh’ combined with ‘God with Us’ and born of a virgin, reveals deity to be clothed in/partake of flesh; Matt 1:18-25 quotes Is 7:14. • 8-10: a way, a highway, the way of holiness; no unclean or fools or wayfaring or beasts; for the redeemed exclusively to walk there, the ransomed of Yahweh; singing, joy and gladness everlasting; sorrow and sighing shall flee.

• To argue physical, material fulfillment in either Rev. 20 or the future Israel is to argue from the baseless , from theological speculation and fails to view prophecies in light of the historical content and as the object of God’s eternal purpose (HH);

• Prophetic language is poetic, metaphorical and hyperbole to express the glory of the spiritual work of God in bringing His eternal purpose to fruition.

• 40:2-9 voice of grace (2), hope (3), faith (6) and evangelism (9); John the Baptist - Mt 3:1-3; Mk 1:3-4; Lk 3:3-6; Jn

1:23; assurance of promise rested on the Word of God and His absolute, eternal nature, creator, all-knowing (v.12-

31).

• 40:10-11 – strength as a ruler (spiritual ruler), tenderness , gentleness, and compassion as a shepherd who will feed, care, protect and lead; => Jn 10:14-15

• Spiritual strength will be provided by Him

Summary of “Firsts”: Prophecies of the Writing Prophets

Name Isaiah

Verse 42:1-15, 16-23 [1 st of 4 Servant Songs – Ch. 42:1-13;, 49:1-19;, 50:4-9, 52:13-53:12]

Prophecy 42:1-15 Behold my Servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delighteth: I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. 2. He will not cry, nor lift up his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street.

3 A bruised reed will he not break, and a dimly burning wick will he not quench: he will bring forth justice in truth.

4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set justice in the earth; and the isles (Gentiles) shall wait for his law. 5

Thus saith God (El) Yahweh, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth; he that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6

I, Yahweh, have called thee (singular) in righteousness, and will hold thy hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house. 8 I am Jehovah, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them. 10 Sing unto Jehovah a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth; ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

42:16-18; 23 And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; in paths that they know not will I lead them; I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things will I do, and I will not forsake them. 18

Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 23 Who is there among you that will give ear to this? that will hearken and hear for the time to come?

Significance • Mt 3:13-17; Mt 12:15-21

• Yahweh’s Servant upon whom He would put His Spirit would not be a vocal or boisterous attention grabber; not a publicity seeker, not a self-promoter, not seeking the spotlight, neither a showman;

• He would minister to the needy, gentle and nurturing, speaking in truth those things that bring justice/rightness;

• Jn 1:14-18

• Yahweh’s Servant would be given as covenant (infers a New covenant), Heb 9:15; 12:24; and a light to the Gentiles

(Is 60:1-3; Hos.2:18; will be repeated by Jer 31:31-34)

• Would open the eyes (sight) of the spiritually blind (Is 42:16,18,19 => Mt 15:14 and Jn 8:31-36)

• Spiritual deliverance preached and fulfilled and a new song (of redemption) Is 42:10 => Eph 5:18-20; Col 3:16; Heb

13:15-16) => Mt 20:28; Jn 6:38; Phil 2:7

• Searching for physical fulfillment of these things is fruitless; no such Servant in a physical sense meets any of these physical qualities; that these are spiritual qualities is confirmed by the inspired writers of the NT; Jesus as the

Messiah possessed all of these qualities and fulfilled all that was spoken of Him in prophecy.

Summary of “Firsts”: Prophecies of the Writing Prophets

Name Isaiah

Prophecy 49:1-13 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye peoples, from far: Yahweh hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name: 2 and he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me: and he hath made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he kept me close: 3 and he said unto me, Thou art my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified. 4 But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely the justice due to me is with Jehovah, and my recompense with my God.5 And now saith Jehovah that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered unto him (for I am honorable in the eyes of

Jehovah, and my God is become my strength); 6 yea, he saith, It is too light a thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. 7 Thus saith Jehovah, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of

Jehovah that is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee. 8 Thus saith Jehovah, In an acceptable time have I answered thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages: 9 saying to them that are bound, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and on all bare heights shall be their pasture.10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them will lead them, even by springs of water will he guide them. 11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. 12 Lo, these shall come from far; and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim. 13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for Jehovah hath comforted his people, and will have compassion upon his afflicted.

Significance • 1-13: the Servant with a world-wide mission; call to the Gentiles (isles – Gen 10:5) to heed;

• ‘From the womb ‘is the spiritual remnant of spiritual Zion (Is 49:3 and 66:7-8; Micah 4:10;5:3) as a new nation or people are brought forth from divine concept/plan; [the church/assembly to be His servant in bringing about His purpose]; metonomy may also be the use of spiritual Israel/church and Christ (as head) as His servant through whom His purpose will be fulfilled;

• His word shall divide, convict, conquer (Heb 4:12; Rev 1:16,2:12,16;19:15) as the instrument of His (spiritual) warfare.

• Servant Israel (assembly, of which Messiah will be head, Col 118); Ps 2:7; Gal 6:16

• Servant discouraged, v.4,8; rejection – Jn 1:10-11; Mk 15:1-20; Yahweh (v.6) to use His servant to restore Gentiles to Him

(through Messiah/church, through king/kingdom); Eph 2:11-13

• 42:6-7 Servant give as “a covenant of the people, for a light to the Gentiles to open blind eyes” here v.6 “that thou mayest be

My salvation to unto the end of the earth” – Acts 4:11-12; 10:43

• v.8 - day of salvation, Servant is preserved (kept/protected) and given as a covenant [Is 42:8] -II Cor 6:1-2

• v.9-12: the bound, the ones in darkness/ignorance, shall hunger/thirst not (spiritually) Jn 6:35; Jn 10:27-28; expressions of wastelands, deserts, waterless/fruitless places describe the spiritual void that will exist prior to the Servant’s coming forth, and the spiritual effects of His work shall result in spiritual fruitfulness, prosperity and feeding/drinking of the soul/spirit of those who hunger and thirst after righteousness (Mt 5).

• From the spiritual remnant (womb) the Servant shall come, hid in Yahweh’s ‘hand’ to the proper time; discouraged at rejection by His own, He would be given as a light to the Gentiles and bring salvation unto the ends of the earth (world wide).

Isaiah

50:4-11 Servant as a Prophet

Isa 50:4 The Lord Jehovah hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught. 5 The Lord Jehovah hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away backward. 6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. 7 For the Lord Jehovah will help me; therefore have I not been confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. 8 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. 9 Behold, the Lord Jehovah will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? behold, all they shall wax old as a garment, the moth shall eat them up. 10 Who is among you that feareth Jehovah, that obeyeth the voice of his servant? he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah, and rely upon his God. 11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that gird yourselves about with firebrands; walk ye in the flame of your fire, and among the brands that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of my hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

Jews should have known:

Summary of “Firsts”: Prophecies of the Writing Prophets

Seed (of the woman, no fleshly father mentioned) would be male, of the flesh and lineage from Judah, a lawgiver and prophet ‘like unto Moses’; as vindicator/redeemer (Job) he would stand upon the earth; he would be rejected, crucified, resurrected, seated at the right hand of God (David, Ps 2,22, 16,110), that the great and terrible day of Yahweh would be during a time of post-exilic (Joel 3:1-2) restorative peace, prosperity, the old order will be abolished (3:16-17) as the HS will be poured out upon all flesh (Jew+Gentile/2:28-29); a remnant will call upon the name of Yahweh and be delivered

(Joel); Amos: One kingdom (house of David) in post-exilic days (9:14); deduced = one king; w/ Gentiles a remnant upon/by whom Yahweh’s name will be called (Amos 9:11); Inferred: One will not be a Jew who is one outwardly; Hosea –

Jew/Gentile will be called “my people” by Yahweh in a new covenant relationship, a betrothal relationship in righteousness, justice, faithfulness, where they are called sons of the living God, they shall seek David their king (one king over one kingdom, from Judah); that this will be in the latter days (last order) where spiritual escape (salvation) will be(gin) in Zion; Isaiah adds:

• Seat of govt. of Yahweh’s house would be exalted above all others; Jew+Gentile would stream to it bringing others

• The law of God would go forth from Zion and Jerusalem; all thy children shall be taught (Is 54:13 – Jn 6:44-45)

• His word/judgment global in nature, applying to all people (all mankind amenable to His Word “in the last days”

• the branch of Yahweh will be deity “in that day”; the ‘Branch of Yahweh’ combined with ‘God with Us’ and born of a virgin, reveals deity to be clothed in/partake of flesh;

• Galilee specifically referenced, spiritual illumination (knowledge/revelation) foretold in context of a child born unto us,

Wonderful, Counsellor, Might God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace – divinity in flesh = Immanuel; His government shall not diminish, upon the throne of David and His kingdom established/upheld justice/righteousness.

• From the tribe of Judah in general, but in particular from lineage of David, specifically from stock of Jesse

• Spirit of Yahweh would reside/remain/dwell on Him w/ qualities of/from God, and in awe/fear/obedience of Yahweh would He remain (Is 53; Lk 4:16ff).

• His governance/rule/law and judging in determining right/wrong would be as Yahweh Himself would judge/rule (these qualities emanate from God)

• Shoot of Jesse would be an ensign/standard, rallying point to assemble around and follow; on Him shall the Gentiles hope; all ethnos/peoples/nations shall seek Him; He will set up an ensign for the nations and will assemble outcasts of

Israel…and of Judah; the salvation of a remnant according to election of grace, not according to old law; shall be a clear, direct path for the remnant, highway shall be called “the way of holiness”.

• A seat of government/ruling power shall be established that is not physical => lovingkindness; rule in truth, one from tent/house of David; rule characterized by just judging, seeking justice, and doing ‘rightness’;

• ‘in that day’ a way (highway) of holiness [35:8] shall be for a remnant of the Gentiles to be redeemed; within the prophecy of the blind to see and deaf to hear [35:5-6]; ‘in that day’; a divine call to all men from all nations; spiritual city w/ spiritual walls (righteousness) for the faithful/obedient; all faithful peoples may enter;

• the conflict, ‘in that day’ Yahweh will punish Satan and Satan’s instrument (beast);

• spiritual Israel (church) shall mature and bear fruit; trumpet is a divine summon, announcement, invitation to those who were about to perish, but being faithful/obedient (highway of holiness) all nations (symbolized by Israel’s long time enemies) assemble together in the holy mountain at Jerusalem (Jews and Gentiles to make up the Lord’s kingdom);

• Jesus Christ as the foundation for God’s eternal purpose; a new spiritual order ; a king over a kingdom beyond sight, a kingdom/city that cannot be removed, permanent w/ its foundation of Jesus as Christ, His word, and His kingdom/city designed with righteousness/truth; Yahweh as judge, lawgiver, and king and savior (v.22 He will save us);

• fruitfulness from the Spirit, righteousness/peace in spiritual city/land w/o boundaries, permanent nature with the Holy

One of Israel as king, judge, lawgiver, and savior.

• voice of grace (40:2), hope (40:3), faith (40:6) and evangelism (40:9) will precede the arm of Yahweh; John the Baptist -

Mt 3:1-3; Mk 1:3-4; Lk 3:3-6; Jn 1:23;

• assurance of promise rests on the Word of God and His absolute, eternal nature, as creator, all-knowing (v.12-31).

B

C that the Lord will come with myriads of His holy ones (angels) to execute judgment upon all and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness…(Enoch’s prophesy in Jude 14-15; a law of God and God as Judge inferred as early as

Enoch. Since judgment of this kind is still yet to occur, one could conclude in 755 B.C. that a new kingdom/order, a new house of David under one king, requires a new law by which to judge ungodliness of Jews+Gentiles together.
