Personal Life
• Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October
14, 1894
• elder of two children
• His father,a professor of sociology and
political science at Harvard University and later
a Unitarian minister(神论部长).
Education
• A Bachelor of Arts degree in Harvard

• Master’s degree in English and Classical
Studies at Harvard.
• At the end of the WWI, going to Paris to study
art, influenced by Gertrude Stein’s syntactical
and Amy Lowell’s imagistic experiments

• Working as a mail-order and then
volunteering for the American Red Cross as an
ambulance driver in France
• Later imprisoned
• After armistice, moving back and met his first
wife.
