Succession Mini Lab Due
Warm Up: Using the method of “breaking down”
a word come up with your own working
definition of the word Biodiversity
NOTE:
Unit Test moved to Thursday 10/2
New Homework:
Review sheet
Objectives:



To define Biodiversity
To analyze the effects of Biodiversity on
communities
To identify threats to Biodiversity
Biodiversity

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is a modern term which simply
means "the variety of life on earth".
Bio= living
Diversity= variety
Succession--Biodiversity--Stability

What is the relationship between these 3 things
in an ecosystem?
Succession--Biodiversity--Stability

What is the relationship between these 3 things in an
ecosystem?
As the stages of succession go on,
Biodiversity increases
As Biodiversity increases more available niches are
occupied,
As niches are occupied ecosystems become more stable
Is there such thing as too much
Biodiversity?

Too much Biodiversity?
In some cases increasing Biodiversity can actually
harm the ecosystem making it unstable
The Snakehead fish in Maryland is an example of an
invasive species also called an exotic species.
An invasive species is one that is not native to an
ecosystem. When it is introduced, it can upset
ecosystem stability by out competing native species
for resources and taking over their niche.
An invasive species can be introduced through human
activity (eg. feral cats) or as a result of natural events
(corral reefs broken and dispalced by storms)
What other things threaten Earth’s
Biodiversity?
Invasive species (exotic species)
Ex: Snakehead fish in Maryland
Zebra mussel in Chesapeake Bay
 Habitat Destruction
(destruction of Niches)
Ex: cutting down forests
 Poaching
illegal hunting of species
 Pollution
Can you think of any more?
