Define the following terms in your own words:
a. Homeostasis: In a state of balance or well-being.
b. Stimuli: A change in the internal/external environment.
c. Response: The reaction to a change or stimulus.
d. Geotropism: A plant’s response to gravity.
e. Phototropism: A plant’s response to light.
f. Positive Response: A response that is towards a stimulus or in the same direction.
g. Negative Response: A response that is away from a stimulus or in the opposite direction.
h. Perspiration: The process of sweating.
i. Transpiration: The evaporations of water from a plant’s stomata.
j. Turgor Pressure: Water presses against the cell membrane of a plant cell.
In response to gravity, the upward growth of stems is a Negative response.
In response to the sun, the upward growth of stems is a Positive response.
In response to gravity, the downward growth of roots is a Positive response.
A tropism is a plants response towards or away from a stimulus.
When a plant is moving water from one cell to another through the cell membranes to maintain homeostasis
(keeps a plant from wilting), it is called Turgor Pressure.
What should scientists do to increase the reliability of an experiment? Scientists should do an experiment
multiple times to increase the reliability of an experiment.
Why does the body develop a fever? The body develops a fever to slow the growth of bacteria.
Sweating is an example of your body trying to stay in a state of homeostasis.
Which two body systems are involved in the process of shivering?
a. Nervous
b. Muscular
How does the process of shivering work? The muscles contracting and relaxing produces heat.
12. In what situation would your body need to breathe faster in order to remove an increased amount of carbon
dioxide?
a. Sleeping
b. Watching television
c. Riding a bicycle
13. Explain your answer choice from Question 12. When riding a bicycle your body is using a lot of energy. Carbon
dioxide is produced and needs to be removed quickly so the body starts to breathe faster.

Over the weekend, Ms. Clark placed two different plants inside of a closed box and two more matching plants in the sun.
On Wednesday she is going to cut a window on one side of the box. Throughout the week we are going to diagram what
happens to each set of plants.
14. What do you think the purpose of this experiment is?
The purpose of the experiment is to observe the phenomenon of phototropism.
15. The purpose of the window was to control the variable of comparison. What variable was being controlled by
the window? Light
Explain your answer The window controlled how much light was allowed into the box and in what direction that
light was hitting the plant. The plants in the sun received light from various directions.
