This booklet will help you plan your performance development programme for basketball.
Remember, you must select your area for development form your development areas in question
2.1.
Your practices/training should gradually become more demanding (get harder), and should always
be relevant to your development area.
Activity – Basketball
Development area – Dribbling
2.2
Prepare a personal development plan with identifiable targets you think will help you
improve your performance in basketball.
You must choose from one of your development areas in the previous answer.
What are your targets for your development plan?
My games analysis shows I regularly mis-control my dribble. My targets for my development
plan are to improve my ability to dribble the ball in game situations and help keep possession for
my team
Briefly outline your plan of action (how are you going to develop your weakness?)
I plan to do 6 practice sessions, each one gradually getting harder. Starting with simple practices
to develop my technique building up to more difficult and more game like practices, before
putting my dribble back into a real game. I will use repetition drills, partner and group practices,
and condition games during my plan.
In the boxes below, outline what you plan to do during each session of your development plan.
Remember your training/practices should get gradually harder, and relate you your chosen area of
development.
Session 1
Warm Up
Gentle jog, changing direction using the basketball court.
Light stretches
With a ball, dribble and shoot at different baskets
Main Practice
1) Dribbling in a straight line across the basketball court from sideline to sideline. Focusing on
dribbling the ball at my side, bouncing it to waist height. Switching dribbling hand at each sideline.
2) Same as above except I put down marker cones in a zig-zag, I have to dribble between them,
going back to the start if I miss one.
3) Same as above, except I take a shot at the end of each dribble.
Session 2
Warm Up
Same as session 1
Main Practice
1)Same as practice 3 from session 1, trying to get faster. Slow down again if I lose control of the
ball.
2)Using a partner. I dribble from sideline to sideline, my partner sprints towards me to act as an
unopposed defender, I have to dodge round him under control and dribble to the other side.
3) Same as above, but with a shot at the end.
Session 3
Warm Up
Same as previous sessions
Main Practice
1)Same as practice 2 from session 2.
2)Same as practice 2 from session 2, except this time my partner will be an opposed partner. He will
try to steal the ball off me. If he does so he gets a point, if I beat him I get a point.
Session 4
Warm Up
Same as previous sessions
Main Practice
1)Same as practice 2 from session 3.
2)In a group of 6 or 8. We have a ball between 2; players have a ball at the side. We collect a pass
from them, dribble through the middle of the circle and pass to another player at the side. We keep
doing this trying to move quicker and under control.
3)Game – Try to dribble as much as possible to make space.
Sessions 5 and 6
Warm Up
Same as previous sessions
Main Practice
1)Conditioned game – 3v3 or 4v4, I must take on the role of guard and be allowed to dribble the ball
down the court. The condition is I must not be challenged until I cross into the opponents half.
2)As above, except my marker is allowed to challenge me anywhere on the court.
3)Live game, my condition is I must play guard.
