I. Background and Purpose:
Our current Associate degree should have a more current title of Associate of Arts degree to follow the higher-ed norm.
Our current Associate degree has additional course requirements, in addition to our general-education requirements.
The additional requirements prevent students from earning the Associate degree.
II. Current Policy Language:
2.1 Associate Degree Requirements
 Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours with a minimum overall grade point average of 2.0.
 Completion of a minimum of 24 resident semester credits, including the last 12 at UW-Superior.
 Completion of UW-Superior General Education Core Requirements.
 Completion of the UW-Superior Diversity and Non-Western Requirements.
 Completion of UW-Superior Knowledge Categories. The Social Sciences Knowledge Category must
be fulfilled by courses in two distinct disciplines.
 The Aesthetic Experience Subcategory must be completed by one of the following courses: ART 101;
COMM 125, 181, 200, 273; MUSI 104-116, 118, 120-139; WRIT 251, 252, 253, 253, or 350.
 An additional three credits in the Natural Sciences. This requirement can be fulfilled by any course in
Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics.
 An additional three credits in the Social Sciences. This requirement can be fulfilled by any course in
Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology or Anthropology.
 An additional four credits drawn from any of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Art History,
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics; English; Film/Theatre History and/or
Appreciation; Foreign Languages; Geology; Geography; History; First Nations Studies; Mathematics
(with the exception of MATH 099 and MATH 095); Music History and/or Appreciation; Philosophy;
Physics; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology; Women's Studies or Writing (with the exception of
WRIT 099, 101, or 102).
 At least two courses, excluding core requirements, in a single discipline.
 Additional courses may be selected from any program to complete the 60-credit-hour requirement for
the associate degree.
III. Draft Policy Statement:
3.1 The Associate of Arts (AA) degree is primarily intended to provide a broad liberal arts background and is designed to
be the foundation for and satisfy the general education requirements for most bachelor degrees. The AA degree is a
two-year degree that includes all general education requirements plus additional credits to total a minimum of 60
credits earned (100 level or above). Honors are not awarded for the Associate degree. Students who intend to transfer
to another institution should earn the Associate degree prior to leaving UW-Superior.
3.2 Associate Degree Requirements:
1. Complete of a minimum of 60 credit hours (numbered 100 or above); at least 24 credits must be earned at UWSuperior
2. Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
3. The last 12 credits of the degree must be earned at UW-Superior.

Submit an electronic application for graduation via E-hive
Pay a $50 graduation fee to the Cashier’s Office prior to the diploma being sent.
Student will not be allowed to graduate with Incomplete or In-Progress grades remaining on their transcript.
Student may not use more than one catalog; student may not satisfy the General Education requirements from one
catalog, while satisfying the major requirements of another catalog.
10. Students are awarded their degree in the term in which they submit a graduation for the respective degree.
