LETTER TO THE EDITOR- 16 WORD LAW WILL END WORLD

POVERTY THIS YEAR!

Stopping World Poverty will require a “16 Word Law” to be passed in USA that will enable 132 poor Nations to establish minimum wages and worker safety standards for the first time. The 16 Word Law simply states it is “Illegal to import goods from 132 Nations not requiring worker safety regulations and $1 dollar an hour minimum wage”. Ironically, these

132 nations are powerless to unilaterally make these laws as Multi-National Corporations (like Walmart) will simply place their orders in one of the other 132 nations with no minimum wage or worker protections. This is called the “Race to the Bottom” and only the USA can stop this destructive race. As the largest importing nation the USA can implement a worldwide minimum safety net wage by passing this 16 word law!

This plan is pure capitalism with no new taxes, welfare programs or new giant bureaucratic organizations needed! Yes, a Bangladesh shirt will cost us 25 cents more but poverty workers now being paid 11 cent per hour will earn $8 an day which is above United Nations poverty level of $2.50 per day per person or $7.50 for family of 3. These increased earnings will result in a $7 Trillion dollar increase in world gross production and allow USA to sell our goods to billions of new customers. This $1 minimum wage is a Win, Win, and Win for poor people/nations, multi-national corporations and rich nations. Most importantly it is the Christian, moral and right thing to do. Jesus second commandment is love your neighbor as you love yourself. Do on to others as you would have them do to you. In a Global world our neighbors are now all across the globe and if we do not raise up the bottom ½ of world’s population the other ½ will be brought down to their level. This is called “Deflation” and is happening in USA right now. Only the USA can stop the “Race to the

Bottom” and U. S. Congress can stop it by passing the 16 Word Law now! Please check out worldpovertyupordown.org for more information on how you can help stop world poverty by asking your U. S. Senator and Representative to pass the 16 Word Law this year….

JESUS taught us to love the Lord with all of you heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Loving your neighbor on the other side of the world does not include paying unfair wages and causing them to work in unsafe conditions. This 16 word law immediately corrects these two situations and is the Christian and moral right thing to do…

Please contact you U.S. Senator and Representative today and ask them to pass this law. Thank You,

Gerry and Cathy Brown

2015 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and Statistics - World Hunger Education Service

Poverty is the principal cause of hunger. The causes of poverty include poor people's lack of resources, an extremely unequal income distribution in the world and within specific countries, conflict, and hunger itself. As of 2015 (2011 statistics), the World Bank has estimated that there were just over 1 billion poor people in developing countries who live on $1.25 a day or less. This compares with compared with 1.91 billion in 1990, and 1.93 billion in 1981. This means that 17 percent of people in the developing world lived at or below $1.25 a day in 2011, down from 43 percent in 1990 and 52 percent in 1981. (This compares with the FAO estimate above of 791 million people living in chronic undernourishment in developing countries.) Progress has been slower at higher poverty lines. In all, 2.2 billion people lived on less than US $2 a day in 2011, the average poverty line in developing countries and another common measurement of deep deprivation. That is only a slight decline from 2.59 billion in 1981. (World Bank Poverty Overview , World Bank 2013 ). Progress in poverty reduction has been concentrated in Asia, and especially, East Asia, with the major improvement occurring in China. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people in extreme poverty has increased. The statement that 'poverty is the principal cause of hunger' is, though correct, unsatisfying. Why then are (so many) people poor? The next sections summarize Hunger Notes' answer.

Harmful economic systems.

Hunger Notes believes that a principal underlying cause of poverty and hunger is the ordinary operation of the economic and political systems in the world. Essentially control over resources and income is based on military, political, and economic power that typically ends up in the hands of a minority, who live well, while those at the bottom barely survive, if they do. We have described the operation of this system in more detail in our special section on Harmful economic systems .
