LETTER FROM THE REGISTRAR

Dear Student,

Each Maalot branch has a registrar who is responsible for the administration and smooth running of the programme. I have been involved with the programme since the first days of its inception in June 2005.

Previously I spent 18 years as a senior manager in the National Health Service and currently work as a lecturer and student facilitator at the University of Bolton. Both of these roles have given me a wealth of experience in establishing a degree programme within the Higher Education Arena. I am delighted to be able to use my skills to benefit the community and enable young men to continue learning whilst gaining academic credit for all their hard work and studies in the Beis Hamedrash.

My role is to: -

Help and advise students about the subject choices required to get a degree from the Thomas Edison College in the USA

Ensure all the administrative work is processed on time such as registration and student grades

Ensure that there is top quality teaching and shiurim

Continuously develop the curriculum, the students and the teachers within it

Communicate and update students, teachers, the Dean and Maalot HQ in Jerusalem

I believe the new innovation of Maalot Whitefield provides a unique opportunity for young men to experience success and growth in learning whilst acquiring an academic qualification. I am sure it will grow and expand with the fantastic team we have on board.

I look forward to seeing you at Maalot Whitefield in the near future.

MAALOT BACKGROUND

Maalot Yerushalayim was established in Jerusalem in 1984 to meet the needs of students wishing to acquire a degree within a supportive, Torah environment.

In 1992, Maalot formalized an agreement with Thomas A. Edison State College of

New Jersey which enables students to receive degrees from Thomas Edison in

Humanities, Art, Liberal Studies, Computer Science, Psychology, Social

Sciences/History or Natural Science/Math.

Thomas Edison is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and

Colleges in America and is recognised as one of the largest distance learning colleges in the USA. Further information can be accessed on www.tesc.edu

(Thomas Edison

State College) and www.msche.org

(Middle States Commission on Higher

Education).

As far as the UK is concerned, this degree is recognised by the UK National

Recognition Information Centre ("NARIC") as being equivalent to a UK BA

). Students who complete this degree should be able to access

Masters Level degree courses at British Universities where the Thomas Edison degree will be evaluated in the same manner as any other non British degree.

In the past six years, Maalot Branches were established in Montreal, Brooklyn, NY,

Baltimore and Detroit, Los Angeles, and London, England. Maalot Greater

Manchester and the Whitefield branch is the latest addition with a branch for seminary girls in Broughton Park Branch. Details may be found at the back of this brochure.

APPLICATIONS AND ADMISSIONS

To apply you must submit a completed application form. This will be followed by an interview. All applicants will be considered on an individual basis. However it is preferable that applicants to Maalot Whitefield will normally possess minimum A level or equivalent secular education and must be conversant with Hebrew texts and commentaries. Enrolling students should also have completed an appropriate period of Yeshiva education. Student values should be compatible with the social setting and the religious commitment of the Institute.

FACILITIES

AT MAALOT WHITEFIELD

The Whitefield campus of Maalot Greater Manchester is situated in the Whitefield

Hebrew Congregation premises, 6 miles from the center of Manchester. Whitefield is a suburb of Manchester housing a thriving and growing Jewish community of more than 1000 families. There are kosher shops, frequent bus, metro and taxi services to other parts of Manchester.

Studying takes place within the Beis Hamedrash of the Whitefield Hebrew

Congregation, where the Whitefield Community Kollel exists providing an atmosphere of real learning and enjoyment.

There is student accommodation in the heart of Whitefield within walking distance of the Beis Hamedrash and students are warmly welcomed by families in the local community and are regular invited into family homes for Shabbos and Yom Tov hospitality.

STUDENT COUNSELLING AND ADVICE

Academic and personal counselling are provided for all students. Maalot’s staff assist students to adapt to the rigorous academic requirements, and when needed, to adjust to life away from home and family. Counsellors assist students to evaluate degree options, select courses and effectively apply prior learning experiences to meet degree requirements. They inform students of independent learning options where appropriate. Counsellors help students to estimate the total cost of their education and plan an appropriate time frame and strategy for realizing their educational goals.

Assistance will be given to students with the separate application to Thomas Edison

State College which must be completed by students wishing to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

The Maalot Whitefield programme enables students to acquire 57 credits while a total of 120 credits are required for a BA. The remaining 63 credits are acquired through A levels, (which are worth approx 10 credits), transcripts for previous University studies

(which are worth 20 –33 credits), B-tech exams and chol exams in subjects such as

Maths, English expression, Ecology, and Algebra. These chol exams will be taken at

Maalot Whitefield on-line via various institutions in America such as DANTES and

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and are worth 3, 6 or 12 credits depending on the topic. The student will receive a BA in either Humanities or Natural

Sciences depending on the student’s A levels or previous university studies. The number of credits awarded for a student’s previous academic studies such as A levels

ACADEMIC POLICIES

Registration and Withdrawal

At the start of each term, students must complete a registration form listing all the courses in which they are enrolled. If for any reason a student finds it impossible to complete a course for which he has registered, he must officially withdraw from that course. Students who stop attending a course are NOT automatically withdrawn from that course and may receive a grade of “F” (see below). Withdrawal can only be made before completion of 15 class hours of the course in any term by completing an official withdrawal form which is available from the registrar’s office.

A grade of “W” – withdrawn – will be given when the student officially withdraws before completion of 15 class hours. An “F” is given for any withdrawals after that time. Students with extenuating circumstances may be allowed to withdraw from the entire program after the 15 hour cut-off point without an academic penalty only with approval from the dean.

Students may join a class no later than 6 hours into the course. The student who registers late is responsible to make up all work that has been missed.

Absences

All absences must be notified to the course Tutor or Registrar immediately, and, if appropriate, a medical note submitted. A written explanation of absence for 2 continuous weeks or more is required.

A student who is absent for a continuous period of at least four weeks (60 days if for illness) without written explanation and/or approval of the Dean will be deemed to have withdrawn from the course or programme of study and their

Registration will be cancelled.

Attending Courses for NO credits

Students may decide to audit a course which means that they take the course for no credit. There is no way to retroactively receive a grade for courses that have been audited. Students should register for such courses as “auditing” students. There is no reduction in tuition for auditing a course. All course prerequisites must be met unless waived by the course instructor. Auditing students are required to participate in all class discussions and complete all assignments, tests and exams. Students will only be allowed to audit classes with special permission from the registrar’s office.

15

Incomplete grades

Students have six months from the last day of the course to complete all coursework and examinations which have not been submitted on schedule. This applies only to those students who have submitted a signed Record of Incomplete Grade form to the registrar’s office and received permission from the registrar for an extension. The instructor will submit a final grade based on all work submitted by the end of the seventh month after the official course end date. A grade of “F” will be assigned automatically to all incompletes after this time.

Appeals

Student appeals to grades must be made immediately to the teacher and the Dean.

Any change of grade must be reported to the registrar at Neve Yerushalayim within one year of the completion date of the course. No changes will be made after this date has passed. See also C HANGE OF G RADE .

Student Responsibility and Time Management

The Maalot model places many demands on students. The large number of courses students register for each term as a result of the dual limmudei kodesh/chol tracks and the objective of completing degree requirements in as short a period as possible, generate pressures that students in other academic frameworks rarely have to contend with. Success at Maalot requires students to deal intelligently and successfully with these pressures. This calls for advance planning and careful time management.

Learning how to cope with these stresses is important preparation for life outside of

Maalot. A percentage of students deal with these pressures by attempting to postpone submitting assignments or taking tests. This leads to the necessity of scheduling makeup examinations. While understandable, this strategy is not something we wish to encourage.

Policy Guidelines

1.

Students should inform their teacher(s) in advance that they will be unable to be in attendance for the regularly scheduled quiz or test. (Informing a teacher is an example of the Derech Eretz we expect of Maalot students.)

2.

Students are expected to remain until their last final is taken. If there is a special circumstance that doesn’t allow this, then arrangements can be made to have a make-up examination administered.

A Division of Neve Yerushalayim Institutions. Tel +(0044) 0161-766-2150

16

3.

Please note that all incomplete grades revert to a grade of F six months after the completion date of the course. Teachers are required to complete a

“Record of Incomplete” form in order to record an initial grade of I. This form states the outstanding requirements – e.g. assignments, exams – and requires both the teacher’s and the student’s signatures.

English Proficiency

Maalot Whitefield is committed to developing cultivated, critically aware Jewish young people who read, write, think and speak clearly with elegance and moral intent.

With that objective in mind, Maalot requires that all graduates demonstrate an acceptable standard of written English expression.

Acceptable scores on standardized tests in Written Expression (for example the CLEP and TECEP examinations) are taken as demonstration of minimum competency in

English proficiency. All Maalot instructors are encouraged to ask students whom they judge to be deficient in various aspects of written expression to work on improving their English proficiency.

College Credit

The Maalot curriculum (163 courses) has been evaluated by the American Council on

Education (ACE). ACE is an independent, non-profit association whose aim is to coordinate the interests of all segments of higher education. ACE makes credit recommendations for courses organized by non-degree granting institutions and schools. Maalot Whitefield does not offer its own degree.

These credit recommendations appear in the National Guide to Educational Credit for

Training Programs and is listed under Zaidner Institute. ACE can only make recommendations to the educational institution; it is up to each individual college or university to decide whether it will accept the ACE recommendation. Thomas Edison

State College accepts all ACE recommendations up to a maximum of 90 credits.

Name Change - Important

All students should use one name consistently on all correspondence, forms and documents. If more than one first or last name appears on past documents (for example a Hebrew and a non-Hebrew first name) this fact should be communicated to

Thomas Edison and ACE. If a student wants his or his Thomas Edison degree

17

processed under a different name (for example, a new married name), that student must submit an official form requesting a name change.

Passport Numbers

Students should utilize their passport number for all paperwork pertaining to their

Thomas Edison degree. (e.g. Maalot Registration form, Request to Register with

ACE, Transcript Request form, test registration – CLEP, DANTES, etc., Thomas

Edison Application form, Thomas Edison Enrollment, etc.)

Branch Transfer

Any student who wishes to transfer from one Maalot branch to another Maalot branch must submit the full application. Please note that acceptance by a Maalot branch does not automatically confer acceptance by Maalot Whitefield.

Credit Through Examination

Thomas Edison State College allows students to earn college credit through examinations, covering a wide range of subjects, including foreign languages. The amount of credits range from 3, for a minimum passing score, to 16 for some foreign language examinations. Students must register for examinations at least one month in advance. Most examinations are administered on the Whitefield campus. Review material for exams, if available, can be borrowed at the time of test registration. It is the students’ responsibility to obtain materials which help them prepare for exams and no one should assume that Maalot has relevant material for a given exam without checking in advance. Material is lent on a “first come first served” basis. Students should consult with their advisors to ensure that a particular test can be applied to their graduation requirements.

Please note that if a student does not pass the examination, there is a mandatory waiting period before it can be retaken. For CLEP and DANTES exams, the waiting period is 6 months; for TECEP it is 3 months.

Maximum 90 credits

A maximum of 90 credits earned through coursework taken at Maalot Whitefield can be applied to the Thomas Edison degree. The remaining 30 credits may be earned through transfer credits, examinations and portfolio assessment.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

Maalot uses a letter system of grading. The final grade for each course results from a compilation of the course components and an assessment of the final examination.

Grades A through C- are passes. Credits from courses with A to C- grades can be applied to the Thomas Edison degree. Courses with grades D or F earn no credit at

Thomas Edison. Students may retake courses in which they received D or F grades.

Grade Values

B+ = 3.333

A = 4

B = 3

A- = 3.666

B- = 2.666

C+ = 2.333 C = 2

D = 1

F = 0

C- = 1.666

Grading Scale

A = 85 + (Excellent)

B+ = 77 – 79 B = 74 - 76 (Good)

A- = 80 - 84

B- = 70 - 73

C+ = 67 – 69 C = 64 - 66 (Satisfactory) C- = 60 - 63

D = 50 - 59 (Poor)

F = 0 - 49 (Failure)

Grade Points

These are calculated by multiplying the numerical value of the grade by the number of credits for the course.

E.g. A 3 credit course at A- grade : 3x3.666 = 10.998

Grade Point Average

The grade point average is calculated on a 4.00 point system by dividing the number of grade points by the total number of credits completed (including courses failed).

The average is rounded to the second decimal place.

TRANSCRIPTS & STUDENT RECORDS

Maalot Transcript

At the end of each term, students will receive a grade report listing each course they took that term. Students have one semester after completion of their course to inform

Maalot of any error they believe to be in their grade report.

Students may request that an official copy of their transcript, including all academic work completed at Maalot be sent to a designated recipient. Official transcripts cannot be faxed to the recipient. This request must be made in writing and must be accompanied by a $10 fee for each transcript. Please allow a three-week turn around time from receipt of transcript request. NOTE: No transcript request will be acted upon until the student’s financial record with Maalot is completely clear.

Students will only be given one unofficial copy of their transcript at no cost.

At any point the student requires, he can check his Maalot course history by visiting www.nevey.org/zaidner . The password is generally the last four digits of the passport number.

ACE Transcript

ACE will issue its own official transcript of Maalot coursework.

The ACE transcript format is similar to most college transcripts and presents the seal of the American Council on Education. In order to open a file with ACE, the student must complete a “Request to Register with ACE” form (Registrar’s office) and include credit card details for $35. This process can take up to one month .

At the time the student submits the “Request to Register with ACE” form, he should request that the registrar Maalot Whitefield have the completed coursework placed on an ACE transcript. Please note that only grades of “C-” and higher are eligible for credit recommendation to ACE.

Once ACE receives a listing of the student’s coursework, a permanent file will be created. As early as two weeks after the data has been sent, students can check online as to whether their data is listed on ACE’s website at https://acenet.edu/transcripts .

Please note that it can take up to 8 weeks for ACE to process the data that is sent.

Students, once they have checked that all their eligible courses are listed online, can request a student transcript by following the online instructions and providing credit card details to cover the transcript fee. Students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree through Thomas Edison should request an ACE transcript designating the Registrar at

Thomas Edison as the recipient. Students must then allow time for ACE to process their transcript request.

Thomas Edison Transcript

Thomas Edison accepts all Maalot credits which fit into the student’s degree program and which it receives on an ACE transcript. Completed courses which cannot be used toward a student’s Thomas Edison degree (for example excess credits) will not appear on the Thomas Edison transcript.

During the period of active enrollment, students can visit Thomas Edison’s website to check the status of their degree. Visit www.tesc.edu

go to current students, online services, click here and then log in using your student id number at Thomas Edison

(provided on your Thomas Edison student card which is received after enrollment) and the last four digits of your passport number.

After enrollment at or graduation from Thomas Edison, a student may request a

Thomas Edison transcript. Thomas Edison graduates receive one free transcript at the time of graduation. This transcript does not include Maalot grades, a grade point average nor any notation of Honors awards. Any additional transcripts require a $5 fee which must accompany a request in writing. This fee is subject to change.

Students have the option of transmitting to universities, prospective employers and other relevant parties both an official Thomas Edison transcript and an official Maalot transcript. The latter records grades and an overall grade point average. Maalot

Whitefield can provide a sample letter which explains how to interpret the various credentials students may send to universities and perspective employers.

Attendance is taken at every class and is reported to the Dean’s office. Excessive absences will result in grades being lowered. One full point (letter grade) will be deducted for six hours of unexcused absence in a 39 hour course. Each additional unexcused three hours of absence will lower the grade by a further third of a grade.

Prolonged absences may only be excused by the Dean’s office, and not by teachers. A

50% absence rate requires the course to be retaken, even if the absences were excused.

NOTE: No absence relieves the student from the responsibility of meeting assigned deadlines for material, assignments or examinations missed.

In general, only a limited number of circumstances meet the criteria of an excused absence. These include: documented illness; family obligations (immediate family members only, not friends); unavoidable obligations stemming from employment as a madrich(a). The academic year does not make provision for students’ return home visits, such as during Pesach break. Students who choose to travel during holidays are responsible for adhering to all scheduled examination and assignment deadlines, and should plan travel only during the official holidays.

Academic Performance

Students are expected to maintain a record of academic performance that indicates successful learning. Any student who does not demonstrate adequate academic achievement will be monitored by the relevant teachers and a report submitted to the

Dean.

Classroom Conduct

Students are expected to arrive promptly to all class sessions, remain for the full duration of the session and to refrain from distracting or disturbing behavior. Eating during class is unacceptable . Students should not daven during class time, nor arrive late due to davening .

Academic Honesty

All work is expected to be the result of the student’s own efforts unless properly acknowledged to be the work of someone else. Academic dishonesty is a very serious offense. Unacceptable behavior includes submitting another student’s work as your own, cheating on examinations, and plagiarism in all forms. Students must give credit

for ideas or materials taken from another source. Any passage, no matter what length, from an article or book should be enclosed in quotation marks and appropriately footnoted.

Personal Conduct

Students at Maalot are expected to reflect the ethical values and personal conduct required of a Ben/Bas Yisroel . Any questions or clarifications regarding these values and standards may be discussed with the Dean.

At the point course results are transmitted by Maalot to either The American

Council on Education or Thomas Edison, Maalot no longer has control over the time period in which the academic information is processed. Maalot will act on students’ behalf to monitor the information passed on to these institutions but cannot, in any way, guarantee how long it will take to process student transcripts.

It is, therefore, advisable that students submit their credit information for processing by Maalot as soon as possible and allow a minimum of two months for processing.
