HIA 2103, MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY II
Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements
Philosophy: This course is a detailed study of medical terminology that integrates the entire spectrum of
information needed by health information managers. This will include anatomical terms, word parts, medical
terms, diagnostic terms, surgical terms, and diagnostic procedural terms of each body system.
Instructor Objectives: The instructor's teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to:
 Identify the meanings of related word elements of each body system.
 Spell and define diagnostic procedures, diagnoses, treatment procedures, and abbreviations of each body
system.
 Hear how medical terminology is used in actual medical reports.
 Identify and define the components of the medical history and physical examination and discharge
summaries.
 Use a medical dictionary.
Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online
and in the traditional setting):
 The following chapters should be covered in class:
o Medical History and Physical Exams
o Pharmacology
o Integumentary System
o Musculoskeletal System
o Surgery
o Cardiovascular System
o Blood and Lymph systems
o Oncology
o Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
o Respiratory System
o Digestive System
o Discharge Summaries
o Urinary System
o Female Reproductive System
o Male Reproductive System
o Endocrine System
o Nervous System
o Mental Health
o Eye
o Ear, Nose, and Throat
 Tests should be given at the completion of each chapter.
 Daily grades should not count for more then 10% of the course grade.
 The final exam must be comprehensive and count 20% of the course grade.
Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course will be expected to participate in assessment
activities as dictated by the division. You will be given further information/instructions by the lead instructor
during the term assessments are to be completed.
