Shop Stores Assistant (Full Time)
Hours of work
35 Hours per week
Work will be 5 out of 7 days.
Usual shift of 8 hours per day which includes 1 hour unpaid breaks.
Salary
Grade 1, £13,210 per annum
Place of work
The normal place of work will be the Student Union Shop in the Hugh
Nisbet Building at our Edinburgh Campus, but the post holder may be
required to attend meetings, training or work at a different location
from time to time.

Job Purpose
Heriot-Watt University Student Union Shop is the sole retail outlet on the Heriot-Watt University
Edinburgh Campus. It is a busy store that serves the students, staff and visitors of the campus 7
days a week, providing a range of groceries, toiletries, stationery, newspapers & magazines and
Heriot-Watt branded merchandise.
The purpose of this role is to facilitate the management of stock within the shop, primarily
ensuring shelves are full replenished, and the relevant processes and procedures adhered to. In
more detail, the role will fulfil the following duties:
Stock
 Manage stock levels on shop floor and replenish as necessary, following planograms as
required

Ensure stock is stored correctly and securely

Follow standard stock rotation methods

Assist with daily stock ordering

Advise management on stock requirements

Receive and check orders as they arrive

Ensure stock room is kept clean and tidy at all times

Customer Service
 Assist in dealing with customer enquiries

Carry out general shop duties e.g. serving customers, cash handling and till operations as
required

Maintain a high standard of customer care

Promote a positive image, both internally and externally, of the Student Union
General
 Observe and maintain health and safety requirements at all times in shop and stockroom

Carry out general cleaning duties and maintain hygiene standards in line with legislation
and organisation policy

Work with all team members to ensure that agreed standards, procedures, and targets
are met, monitored and in accordance with the vision & values of the union and the area
you work in.

Attend training or meetings relevant to the job as required and participate in the union
staff appraisal cycle.

Contribute as a team member to ideas in relation to operational efficiency and service
standards and make recommendations when appropriate.

Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with policy and procedures of the
union.

Undertake other duties as appropriate for the grade and responsibility of the post and
which may be, from time to time, reasonably requested.
Person Specification
Essential
Knowledge and Experience
 Experience in stock replenishment / rotation
 Knowledge of placing orders / receiving stock
 Experience working in a retail environment
 Experience using computerised stock management
systems
 Experience of maintaining high standards of
merchandising and display
