Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to basic accounting principles, methods of
keeping business records, preparing financial statements, and explore career opportunities in
accounting. I am hopeful that this course will improve your appreciation of accounting, the
business world, and help you in planning your future, both academically and personally.
Course Requirements
Students are required to:

Attend class regularly and be on time

To have read and prepared problems and any other homework assigned prior to
coming to class

Actively engage in the classroom discussion

Complete all assignments and exams within the time provided
Textbooks and other materials
Required:
Financial and Managerial Accounting 4th Edition (Chapters 1-13)
(Wild, Shaw, and Chiappetta)
Working Papers for College Chapters 1-13, 4th Edition
Suggested Readings:
The Los Angeles Times
The Wall Street Journal

All papers (homework, tests, and any other paperwork) will be kept for ONE SEMESTER.
Any requests for grade adjustments need to be discussed within that one semester time
period. Once the following semester has been completed all documentation will be
destroyed.

The purpose of this course are to enable you to:

Apply basic accounting concepts related to the accounting cycle

Define terminology related to accounting and accounting careers

Discuss business practices based on accounting information
Course Format
The course setting will be informal and based on discussions and problem solving. There
will be interactive discussions on accounting, its role, and it fits in to the world of business.
Small groups will work together throughout the course.
Class Participation – 10%
Class participation is essential to this course. Each element of this course builds from the
previous section and culminates at the end with a group project. Participation is made up of
attendance and contributions to the classroom discussions.
Attendance
The Business Department has adopted this guideline regarding absences:
When accumulated absences for a class exceed two weeks of class meetings, the student is
subject to dismissal from that class. Three tardies will count as one absence. The decision of
the instructor to dismiss on grounds of excessive absences and /or tardies will be based on
the class attendance record and will be considered final. After the final drop date, excessive
absences will result in a lowered grade.
Grading
A = 100% - 90%
B = 89% - 80%
C = 79% - 70%
D = 69% - 60%
F = 59% - 50%
Participation – 15%
Homework – 20%
Chapter Tests – 20%
Project – 20%
Final Exam – 25%
