Use ellipses if you want to shorten a quote:
Example: "None of the national reports made even passing references to
inequality or segregation. . . . Booker T. Washington was cited with

You can also use a snippet of a quote within your own sentence:

Correct paraphrase:

when dealing with the loss of a loved one (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
