BRINGING OUR TREES TO A CLOSE
 It has been 4 weeks of reading Speak.
 There have been 4 very different trees and countless passages that you and I have found worthy of exploring.
 Melinda is now in recovery and we can now consider what the journey has been like.
REFLECTIVE ESSAY (ICA)
 Entirely within class time you will complete a reflective essay which will be marked on the provincial rubric (the
one that you will see on the provincial exam).
 This will be the final grade that goes into Powerschool for Speak

 Write a carefully constructed essay about whether or not Laurie Halse Anderson’s
use of motif contributed to the reader’s understanding of Melinda’s trauma and
eventual steps to recovery.
 In your concluding paragraph include a reflection on the impact an individual voice can make.
 What does it mean to write a carefully constructed essay?
1. Introduction- Thesis. Where you lay out the plan of your essay. What will you talk about? How will you talk
about it?
2. Body Paragraphs- Explanation and arguments. Supported with proof. Since it is a reflective essay then it will be
personal evidence and references to the novel.
3. Conclusion- Enforcing the ideas from your body paragraphs.

other things.
