Homosexuality and the Law

• Homosexuality became legal in 1967 as long as....

• All such activity took place in private

• Those involved were consenting adults aged 21 or over.

• In 1994 the age of consent was reduced to 18 and in 2000 reduced again to 16.

What about marriage?

• The first “civil partnership” in the UK took place on 5

December 2005.

• A civil partnership happens when two people sign the civil partnership document in the presence of a registrar and two witnesses. It is the same procedure as a civil wedding in a registery office.

• You can’t have any religious songs or readings at a civil partnership, and you can’t have one in church.
