Density

Do you remember how to find density from physical
science class?

Density = mass/volume



D = m/V
Units for solids are typically:


Or
g/cm3
Units for liquids are typically:

g/mL
Refresher Problems



You have 16 grams of sucrose (a sugar) that fits in a
box that is exactly 10 cm3. What is the density of
sucrose?
16 g/10 cm3 = 1.6 g/cm3
1.59 is actually the density of sucrose which is
typically table sugar
Refresher Problems


You have 20 mL of maple syrup to smother all over your
pancakes. If maple syrup has a density of 1.3 g/mL how
much more mass will your fluffy pancakes have?
m = d x V = (1.3 g/mL)(20 mL) = 26 g

Temperature


The Kelvin (K) is actually the SI unit for
temperature
To convert Celsius (oC) into Kelvin the equation is:


C + 273 = K
To convert Kelvin into Celsius the equation is:

K – 273 = oC
Temperature Problems

Convert 115 oC into Kelvin


115 oC + 273 = 388 K
Convert 356 K into Celsius

356 K – 273 = 83 oC

26.7 mg = ______ kg
Start by writing down what you are starting with
26.7 mg
Put the units you want canceled on the bottom and the
unit you are looking for on top. If they are not within
1000 units of each other use the measurement that is
within 1000 units:
26.7 mg x ________g_
