This article discusses the problems with and with not legalizing prostitution and each
side’s effects on the community of sex workers female, male, and transgender. It also
addresses the situation that people think by legalizing prostitution it would get rid of the
many problems associated with prostitution, but actually it depends on each country and
their personal views. It also says that by criminalizing the purchase of sex while forcing
sex workers into rehabilitation and forced STD testing goes against their personal
freedoms and health privacy infringing on their rights. This article highlights the different
problems with each side of the prostitution debate.
This article is from the Foreign Policy and was written last year making it very credible. This
resource also touches on both sides of prostitution which makes it useful for my research. In this
article the author discusses how the outcome of legalizing prostitution differs between each
country. This is important because when comparing the United States to other countries the
outcomes may not be the same. Another important aspect is that this article discusses the
harshness that prostitutes face which helps argue that there should be a policy change
somewhere. This article is very credible and useful because it addresses certain concerns that
other articles missed when taking into consideration the legalization of prostitution

"Decriminalizing Prostitution Linked to Fewer STDs and Rapes." Targeted News Service (USA)
2 Aug. 2014, Education & Schools. NewsBank. Web. 26 Feb. 2015.
This article depicts a social scientific experiment that went on from 2003 to 2009 dealing
with prostitution. In 1980 Rhode Island “accidentally” decriminalized indoor prostitution.
Several indoor massage parlors where being taken to court for prostitution, but were
found not guilty due to the interpretation of the policy change. It took from 2003 to 2009
for the policy to change back to its original interpretation, criminalizing all prostitution.
The study was to analyze the effects of the decriminalization of indoor prostitution.
During this six year period it was seen that the amount of rapes that occurred in Rhode
Island had decreased by roughly thirty-one percent. Also, at the same time a two
thousand decrease in the number gonorrhea cases was recorded. This article is an actual
real world example for the United States that depicts how changing the policy of
prostitution can have an effect on the public.
This article is extremely useful because it is a study that was done to illustrate the effects of legal
prostitution in the United States. This article is also from a news service which means that it is
used to inform the public of the study that was done. Inside this article it includes actual
theoretical statistics of what would happen if prostitution was legalized in the United States
based of the outcome of Rhode Island. Another important point is that this article discusses the
benefits such as lack of violence that the general population would receive if prostitution was
legalized in the United States, not just the benefits of the prostitutes. This article is very useful
because it helps see the benefits society would receive if prostitution was legalized.

Information, And Market Structure In Prostitution Markets." Southern Economic
Journal 79.3 (2013): 513-528. Business Source Premier. Web. 26 Feb. 2015.
This article gives real data elaborating on how the current prostitution situation already
grosses a multi-billion dollar profit and focuses on the effects of intermediary people
such as pimps. This article mainly discusses the market with and without the
intermediates in the equation of prostitution making this more of an economic stand
point. In several countries prostitution is legalized, but the use of a pimp is not legal. It
illustrates the intermediaries can increase and decrease consumer surplus, but has no
effect on producer surplus. In this article they even included an equation in order to find
how each minute detail can have an effect on the overall situation. This article gives a
good illustration on how pimps play a role in the economic situation.
This article relates to my topic extremely well because it discusses how intermediaries effect the
prostitutes. It mainly discusses just the pimps financial impact, but that is important in
determining if abuses occur through monetary holds on the women and how it also affects the
price of sex. This article is from the Southern Economic Journal which gives credibility to the
argument. This article is only coming across the situation at a financial stance and does not pay
tribute to the situation of the women which is good because it gives unbiased opinion, but also
negative because their situation could also have an impact. The intended audience is business
people in America because it was written in an economic journal and it was a report on the
economics of prostitution in America. Overall, this article is very useful for my paper because of
it is not bias of favoring legalization over criminalization or vice versa, but is a result from a
study.

Fuchs, Erin. "7 Reasons Why America Should Legalize Prostitution." Business Insider. Business
Insider, Inc, 13 Nov. 2013. Web. 15 Feb. 2015.
This article is based off of a study done on the legal brothels in Nevada. Through this
study the author believes that women would be much safer and the industry would be
much cleaner due to mandatory STD tests. It would keep women safe because brothels
that are already in the business legally want to uphold their image as being clean and
safe. They would also have access to preventative care such as birth control and
condoms. Prostitution could also be seen as a way for states to make money by having a
high tax on the business and also for police resources to be channeled in another direction
other than towards prostitution. This article helps see why economically the idea of
legalizing prostitution would be beneficial.
This article’s main audience is business professionals because it relates the profession of
prostitution to the business aspect. This article is written by the Business Insider which is a very
credible journal pertaining to business information. This article lacks in some areas because it is
based only on an economic stand point, not addressing other concerns. This article is extremely
useful because it is unbiased because it uses facts and economic reasoning compared to personal
opinion that can be affected by different views. This article does not have an author to question
his credibility, but because of journal that it is published in and it’s factual information it is very
useful for my topic.

Market For Prostitution Services." Journal of Population Economics 22.2 (2009): 501516. Business Source Premier. Web. 27 Feb. 2015.
This paper depicts prostitution from the economic stand point, applicable to both genders
and examines pay and earning opportunities. The authors make a behavioral hypothesis
that can be applied to both genders. It also shows the effects of reputation on the clients
and sex workers. The authors also illustrate the supply and demand for prostitution and
when it reaches approximate equilibrium. By comparing different policies across the
globe and how it affects each market of the sex industry it can be seen how prostitution is
may or may not work in different situations. This article shows the differences between
different countries and comes at the debate from a more economic stand point
This article is from an academic journal targeting those interested in economics giving it high
credibility. This article is very useful because it is based off the economics of prostitution and
does not use personal opinions, but actual facts to base its arguments off of. Also this article
includes information that is not usually thought of in considering prostitution such as male
prostitutes. This article is very useful because it comes from a very credible source and it also
includes aspects that would not generally be thought of to illustrate that there is so many
variables to consider in this topic.
