HISTORY

Established in 1917, Ellington Field was one
of the first military airfields in the United
States and was named after Lieutenant Eric
Ellington, who was killed on a training mission.

The ATC tower was constructed in 1954.

NASA established Ellington Field as its base for astronaut flight training in
the early 60s.

In 1976 Ellington Field was officially deactivated by the Air Force,
however, the Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard and
the US Coast Guard maintained military presence.

Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 to use as a
third civil airport and was renamed Ellington Airport on January 14, 2009.

Consists of three runways .
The tower structure is owned and maintained by Houston Airport System (HAS). The controllers
are contracted through the Air National Guard (Dynamic Science Intl.). The tower is operational 24
hours 7 days a week.
The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station is owned and operated by the Air National
Guard.
