Summary Job Description
The Social Enterprise Development Intern (SEDI) will work directly with the Business Development Manager and the
Businesses Team at AfriKids (UK), with a focus on AfriKids’ Social Enterprise Businesses in Northern Ghana. Our
portfolio includes:






AfriKids Hospital – seeing 60,000 patients per year and generating significant profit
AfriKids Blue Sky Lodge – a £2 million project to build a unique tourism opportunity in Northern Ghana
Energy for Life Programme – a new income generation fuel efficient stove project
Family Livelihoods Support Programme – microfinance
Ethical Trade Initiatives
AfriKids Squared – our UK consultancy arm

run AfriKids’ award-winning child rights projects for as long as they’re needed, without dependence on aid.
The SEDI role is ideally suited to someone with consulting or business experience, looking to transition into the Third
Sector. As the SEDI is a highly practical role we seek someone who can slot straight into the team, bringing a business
skillset to the challenges of developing social enterprises.
As a valued member of AfriKids (UK)’s small team, the SEDI will have exposure to all areas of the organisation, from
programmes to fundraising, with the opportunity to develop a wide range of transferable skills and experience, including
project oversight, strategic development, project planning and delivery, implementation of best practice, linking projects
to fundraising, information sharing, media and communications, events, finance and budget management, stakeholder
relations and monitoring and evaluation. A driven, positive and flexible individual, who enjoys the opportunity to apply
their initiative and has a passion for business and development would be well suited to this role.
In the interests of maximum benefit to both AfriKids and the post holder, internships with AfriKids (UK) are for a
minimum of 3 months, 4-5 days per week (8.5 hours per day, Mon-Fri) with the opportunity, if jointly agreed at the 3
month review point, to extend the placement to a maximum of 6 months. Upon completion of an internship with
AfriKids (UK), applications to intern with AfriKids Ghana will be considered.

Specific Responsibilities of the Social Enterprise Development Intern
To support in the development and delivery of the AfriKids Blue Sky Lodge project:
o Internal and external communications on project planning and delivery
o Partnership development and management
o Research, administration and finance support
o Support with strategic project reviews and development
o Media and communications
To document and help develop AfriKids’ business ethics and policies
To support with capacity-building initiatives to equip AfriKids Ghana with the skills and resources required for
optimum project delivery and business development
To support in the development and coordination of effective project management tools
To support the development of new business opportunities, including contributing new ideas and initiative
General Responsibilities of the Social Enterprise Development Intern
Support in business monitoring and evaluation and internal/external information sharing
Research projects on selected areas
Collection, review and analysis of business data
Internal and external business communications
Development and coordination of Business external contacts
Organisational knowledge; supporting in the management of Business Team enquiries
Attend all AfriKids (UK) team meetings as required
Liaise with AfriKids’ donors, trustees etc. as may be required in an appropriate manner
Efficient administrative support service to the Business Department
Occasionally travel with the Business Team to take notes or dictations at meetings and provide general assistance
during presentations
Undertaking additional work within the scope of the post as may be required by the Director
Special requirements
The post holder will occasionally be expected to attend scheduled meetings and events before 9.00am and after 5.30pm
between Monday and Friday, and very occasionally at weekends.
